Hello very good morning, afternoon, evening, cinephiles. Today I'm here to tell you about my experience with Red, the Pixar production that has caused too much furor for several reasons. And here I am going to break down several points explaining what it was that captivated me about the film.

1. Direction and female point of view:

One of the biggest curiosities of this production is what is the first Pixar film, directed entirely by a woman, Domee Shi, who also directed Bao; the first Pixar short film directed by a woman and which won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film Oscar in 2019. But that's not all, the entire production team is made up of women. And why is this important? Because the film touches on issues of female reality that are still not touched with the freedom and naturalness that is due, a clear example is the mention and reference to menstruation in the scenes of the film tape. Many users felt disgusted with the latter, arguing that it was not an important topic or simply that it is unhygienic, when the truth is that today there are about three hundred million women and girls who menstruate.

2. History:

Since I gave you some context as to why the this animated movie created such a revolution since its release on March 11 of this year, I will now proceed with what would be my experience with the movie, the movie tells us the story of Mei Lee, a thirteen year old girl in the year 2002. She is an excellent student, who also helps her mother every day to clean and take care of her family temple, which is her source of income, so every day people visit it to be blessed.

As I already mentioned, Mei Lee is only 13 years old, that is, she is in her puberty stage and is discovering her sexuality. On the other hand among her many talents is the art of drawing, one day she decided to draw a boy as she sees him in her fantasies and her mom discovers this notebook, she embarrasses her in front of this boy and many other teenagers in her school. And from this point my mother and I who found ourselves watching the movie found the mother's way of talking wrong because she didn't even ask her what was going on she just went and took these actions against this boy who was a store manager accusing him of pedophilia practically and after this she pretends that Mei trusts him with other aspects of her life.

After this embarrassing moment this girl goes to sleep with the thought of What is a dishonor to her mother because if this girl never thinks that her mother is wrong she simply thinks that she is already her greatest pride and must achieve to fulfill all the expectations of her mother. With all these thoughts in mind we see a lot of nightmares What are the likes of the girl in a scary way the gang of boys she likes turned into flowers, her drawings coming to life but looking like they came out of a horror movie. It is not clear what happens until that moment but she wakes up making a great
Red panda, she is very afraid that her parents will see her, so her sweet mother tells her that what is wrong with her is that her first menstruation has come. So this girl discovers by herself that relaxing makes her become human but getting too excited she turns into this one. Then her mom shames her inside the school and everyone sees her panda, when I say everyone I mean the town in general because may runs away scared because she thinks her mother doesn’t know what is going on but later she finds out that an ancestor inherited this gift or curse to the women in the family.

From this point we see pure very sad patterns of the relationship Mei has with her mom. Because her mother is always attacking certain tastes of teenagers saying that it is vulgar or that they simply look bad, and when her mother thought that things she liked were wrong, she closed herself in her bubble, her own tastes and for her. Can you imagine being so afraid of your mother’s reaction that she doesn’t even know what your favorite band is? Well this happens in this movie.

It should be noted that Mei does have a father and in fact, it is said that he is a great cook, it is never specified in the film if he works outside the temple but from what is implied he is in charge of preparing the food at home and educating his daughter, in fact he always tries to intercede for his daughter in front of his wife, so it is something very congruent the fact that every time she is going to make a scandal she does not say anything to her husband. Mei’s father is always there to calm his wife and soothe her, that is to say, he fulfills the function that Félix fulfilled in calming Pepa in Encanto, if the movie were to understand the reference.

I think if I went deeper into this point I would ruin the experience for people who have not yet seen this gem, believe it or not many of the things I am talking about here are in the trailer. There’s a lot still to be discovered, like why is Mei’s mom being this way with her?

3. Animation:

Looking at it from a technical point of view it is an amazing movie, the technology with which it was executed is mind-blowing, there are several scenes that I feel are there to tell the world “ Pixar and we are the ultimate in animation”, it is simply wonderful. It gives me great pleasure to visualize the details that are in each of the characters, from the red panda’s fur to the design of the clothes are amazing. I can’t even imagine all the work that went into this masterpiece.

4. The importance the movie gives to friendship and the puberty stage.

The group of friends of our protagonist is unconditional and consists of three girls, Abby, Prya and Miriam, the latter being the one who is closest to Mei. The most of the movie we are going to see this group living together and I assure you that it will make you laugh with their pre-teenager witticisms, the obsession they have for the artists is something that could border on the ridiculous but, let's say it's not so, because my parents told me that I am just as crazy as them when talking about Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles.

And as I said the group is unconditional with Mei, so it’s almost impossible not to fall in love with their characters and the beautiful relationship they have with each other.

5. Representation:

Another point I absolutely loved in Red is the fact that it’s set in a city as diverse as Toronto is, so there are people from all cultures. Like our protagonist who comes from an Asian family and from what we can see lives in Chinatown. We can also see different people with turbans and hijab throughout the film, implying that they have another culture, root or religion.
If you ever thought that there were no characters like you in an animated movie then you probably won’t with this movie, there is a lot of visibility to all body types in fact my favorite character Abby, who is one of Mei’s best friends, is a girl with a body type that most of society would pigeonhole with the label “Fat” but, she totally breaks away from the stereotypes that we have been shown in the movies. She doesn’t ridicule her body, make jokes about her weight, or come across as a slacker. In fact she is the most energetic of her group of friends, she is very outgoing and from what we see in a physical education class she is also the most athletic of them all.

Another part that had a lot of visibility in the film was the fact that we are shown people with different abilities, there are several times when we see on screen infants or adults in wheelchairs as what they are, normal people. The world does not slow down to see them, nor does it ridicule them.

There are also other characters such as Stacy, a girl who is a classmate of our main characters and who can be clearly seen when she is on screen making adorable comments that she wears insulin patches, giving us a glimpse of her having diabetes as a child. Doing a little research on the film I discovered that this fact is based on the film’s technical supervisor’s experience living with type 1 diabetes.

6. The soundtrack

This point is somewhat surprising for the fact that it is made up of only one song that is performed by the characters of Mei’s favorite band, really if you are not going to see the movie at least look for the song Nobody Like You by 4*TOWN, it is too good, you won’t regret it. It transports you back to the 2000’s.

7. My anecdotes watching the movie:

As I told you this movie I saw it four times, twice it was with my mom because we loved the movie both of us and we love to share time together, and we love to comment on movies while watching it.

I saw it with my older cousin who loved the musical scenes and laughed his head off at the scenes where the characters were doing crazy things.

And the last one was with all my close family, my mom, my dad and my little brother, I will only say that things got sensitive with my dad because of the fact that the movie touches very closely the change in the relationship between parents and children, when the latter grow up.

Thank you very much for reading, I hope my review will lead you to see the movie if you haven’t seen it yet and in case you have, you will find it refreshing to see another point of view, see you later!

Sort:

There are also other characters such as Stacy, a girl who is a classmate of our main characters and who can be clearly seen when she is on screen making adorable comments that she wears insulin patches, giving us a glimpse of her having diabetes as a child. Doing a little research on the film I discovered that this fact is based on the film’s technical supervisor’s experience living with type 1 diabetes.

I remember an article on our six o'clock evening News about this movie. My wife who, like myself, is from an older, more prudish generation, almost sunk into her recliner chair and disappeared, turning a deep shade of red herself, with embarrassment. We aren't used to such open honesty about such personal issues, at our age. We do think that it is great for the younger generations, who are more open about such things now, though. Long may it continue. Our generation, however, wasn't brought up that way, and it may take a while to overcome the taboos which we inherited.

That said, it is great that diversity is gaining more attention in the arts, media, and film these days. We have seen dolls made with wheelchairs lately, emojis depicting a person in a 👩‍🦼 motorised wheelchair, and now a movie which includes an insulin-dependent diabetic! This really is progress!

Some topics can be very embarrassing when we do not talk about them freely, but many times after a while we realize that they are normal topics.

It is important that children have a reference, there is nothing more beautiful than seeing a character in an animated movie and say "That happens to me", "He looks like me", it is important that children have in mind that we are all different and that this is normal.

I hope you liked my review.

I have not seen it, but I am looking forward to seeing it, I like that these topics such as the onset of menstruation are touched upon, I am a father of two daughters and I always educated them from a very young age to prepare them for this hormonal change, but still in some people and even in some cultures, this seems to be a topic that is not adequately addressed. These types of movies are important, besides offering entertainment, they contain some learning.

I invite you to join the community discord, so you can meet other cinemagoers who are active, also remember that Hive is a social network and interaction is important. Reading and commenting on other users' posts, especially from the niche community in which you are active, is important because it shows your commitment to the platform.

I really recommend it, the analogy to menstruation is very obvious, it lets us see how our protagonist experiences mood and personality changes the more her "Panda" manifests itself, something that really happens to us in puberty.

There are scenes where Mei gets desperate waiting for the panda to go away, and it really reminded me of the times I've had menstrual cramps, lol. It also shows us the reality of parents, like how sometimes our parents are a certain way because of how they were raised.

Seriously, I'm pretty sure you'll find it interesting.
