Me encuentro en la situación de ver la película que consigo. De allí que mi mundo cinematográfico está reducido en estos momentos. A veces puedo disfrutar de películas que están de moda y en otras ocasiones tengo que recurrir a largas búsquedas por internet y detenerme en algún título que me llame la atención.
Esto es lo que me ha pasado con El hombre que conocía el infinito de Matt Brown. La he encontrado por casualidad y a continuación les daré mi apreciación.

I find myself in the situation of watching the movie I obtain. Hence my movie world is narrowed at the moment. A times I can enjoy movies that are in vogue and at other times I have to resort to long internet searches and stop at some title that catches my attention.
This is what happened to me with Matt Brown's The Man Who Knew Infinity. I found it by chance and I will give you my review below.

Lo primero que les diré es que la película es un Biopic del hindú Srinivasa Ramanujan, quien fue un matemático brillante que dejó varias contribuciones a la teoría de los números, y a las fracciones continuas, con un método inusual para los matemáticos de la época.
The first thing I will tell you is that the movie is a Biopic of the Hindu Srinivasa Ramanujan, who was a brilliant mathematician who left several contributions to number theory, and continued fractions, with an unusual method for mathematicians of the time.

Srinivasa Ramanujan, nació y murió en Tamil Nadu, en los años en que el gobierno Británico tenía esa región como una colonia.
Ramanujan creció en medio de mucha pobreza y aunque estudió en la escuela formal solo los libros le daban lo que él necesitaba. Fue autodidacta e investigó los Números de Bernoulli y desarrollo sus propios métodos para la constante de Euler (con 15 decimales).
Ahora bien, este es el personaje. El guion de esta película está basado en la novela con el mismo nombre que fue escrita por Robert Kanigel y los diálogos fueron hechos por Matt Brown, quien además fue el director del filme.
Srinivasa Ramanujan, was born and died in Tamil Nadu, in the years when the British government had that region as a colony.
Ramanujan grew up in the midst of great poverty and although he studied in formal school only books gave him what he needed. He was self-taught and researched Bernoulli Numbers and developed his own methods for Euler's constant (to 15 decimal places).
Now, this is the character. The script of this movie is based on the novel with the same name that was written by Robert Kanigel and the dialogues were made by Matt Brown, who was also the director of the film.
A pesar de que lo que les he contado se ve súper interesante tengo que decir que Matt Brown (Director) no supo hacer bien su trabajo. La película no exploró la breve vida de Srinivasa Ramanujan (32 años), así como tampoco supo aprovechar los paisajes de la India y de Inglaterra. Las diferencias culturales apenas si son abordas con temor y, desde mi punto de vista, esos elementos pudieron darle a este filme una mejor argumentación visual y mayor solidez en el planteamiento semántico.
El filme no es malo, todo lo contrario, tiene la virtud de presentar a un hombre brillante, del siglo XX, que hizo aportaciones muy valiosas para las matemáticas en un mundo donde él, aparentemente, no tenía cabida.
Yo pienso que en la película fue desaprovechado todo. Tenemos una breve introducción de la vida de Ramanujan en Madrás y a través de pocos fotogramas descubrimos la pobreza extrema en que vivía con su esposa y su madre. No obstante, de dónde venía su grandeza (o al menos alguna especulación sobre cómo él descubría los números), fueron ahogados muy rápidamente por la débil puesta en escena de Matt Brown.
Although what I have told you looks super interesting I have to say that Matt Brown ( Director) didn't know how to do his job well. The film did not explore the brief life of Srinivasa Ramanujan (32 years old), nor did it take advantage of the landscapes of India and England. The cultural differences are hardly addressed with trepidation and, in my view, those elements could have given this film a better visual argument and a stronger semantic approach.
The film is not bad, on the contrary, it has the virtue of presenting a brilliant man, from the 20th century, who made very valuable contributions to mathematics in a world where he apparently had no place.
I think that in the film everything was wasted. We have a brief introduction of Ramanujan's life in Madras and through a few frames we discover the extreme poverty in which he lived with his wife, and mother. However, where his greatness came from (or at least some speculation about how he discovered the numbers), were drowned out very quickly by Matt Brown's weak mise-en-scène.

Después, tendremos la oportunidad de ver un reparto maravilloso y eso se debe decir. Pero primero debo mencionar a los protagonistas: Srinivasa Ramanujan fue interpretado por el actor Dev Patel, quien es conocido por sus trabajos anteriores tanto en Bollywood como en occidente. Quizás si les menciono Slumdog Millionaire o Lion, o más recientemente Cruella, todos saben quién es el actor.
En Madrás también nos encontramos con Arundhati Nag como la madre de Ramanujan, y la actriz Devika Bhise como Janaki (la esposa de Ramanujan).
Cuando la historia se traslada para Inglaterra, tenemos al maravilloso actor Jeremy Irons que hace el papel de G.H Hardy y que francamente refresca la película en varias ocasiones. Bien por su terquedad, bien por su perseverancia o bien porque es un gran actor e hilo conductor de esta historia.
Un regalo para los matemáticos puros fueron los trabajos actorales de Toby Jones y Jeremy Northam en los roles de John Edensor Littlewood y Sir Bertrand Russell, respectivamente.
Then we get a chance to see a wonderful cast, and that must be said. But first I must mention the leads: Srinivasa Ramanujan was played by actor Dev Patel, who is known for his previous work both in Bollywood and in the West. Perhaps if I mention Slumdog Millionaire or Lion, or more recently Cruella, you all know who the actor is.
In Madras we also meet Arundhati Nag as Ramanujan's mother, and actress Devika Bhise as Janaki (Ramanujan's wife).
When the story shifts to England, we have the wonderful actor Jeremy Irons who plays the role of G.H Hardy and frankly freshens up the film on several occasions. Either because of his stubbornness, his perseverance or just because he is a great actor and thread of this story.
A treat for pure mathematicians were the acting jobs of Toby Jones, and Jeremy Northam in the roles of John Edensor Littlewood, and Sir Bertrand Russell, respectively.

Pienso que ya he dado bastante información de la película, por supuesto sin contarla. Es un filme lineal, en su narrativa, que cuenta la historia de un hombre increíble que estuvo en Inglaterra durante la primera guerra mundial, que pudo sufrir desprecio por su cultura y el color de piel. Que fue a la Universidad de Cambridge y alcanzó ser miembro de la Royal Society de Londres en 1918.
Como dardo final les dejo la intriga del número 1729 que es conocido como el número de Hardy-Ramanujan y que tiene una agradable anécdota, ¿sabes de qué se trata? Descúbrelo en El hombre que conocía el infinito.
I think I have already given enough information about the film, of course without telling it. It is a linear film, in its narrative, telling the story of an amazing man who was in England during WWI, who may have suffered scorn because of his culture and skin color. He went to Cambridge University and became a member of the Royal Society of London in 1918.
