Once again I got a new movie recommendation from my Instagram reel. As I was strolling through my Instagram video feed, I came across a clip from the movie Remember Me, starring Robert Pattinson, who happens to be the latest Batman of 2022. In the video clip, Robert was trying to introduce himself to a very attractive lady while trying to spark a conversation at the same time, but it was so obvious she wasn't interested at all. You could see from her body language, lesser use of words, and above all her reluctant attitude towards replying. All these were not what drew me to the movie but the way Robert persevered in making sure he spoke to the lady while doing it in a soft romantic manner in order not to make her feel disturbed was what grabbed my interest.
As expected, I did my usual routine whenever I come across a lovely movie scene on Instagram, check the comment section for the title of the movie, open my Letterboxd to add it to my watchlist for later reference when I am finally free to watch the movie. Actually, it didn't take long until I laid my hands on the movie later that day.
Through my research on the movie, it came to my notice that it is a 2010 movie, which shouldn't be extremely hard to decode since the graphics and picture quality were a bit low unlike movies made in this present era. Another code that gave the movie out to be something released 12 years ago was how young Robert looked, a bit skinnier with a boyish stature unlike his recent look in the 2022 Batman, where he was all mature and very masculine. Also, in the course of finding out more about the movie before preparing my mind to watch it, I found out it got a positive review of 7.1 out of 10 from IMDb and a negative review of 26% out of 100 from rotten tomatoes which got me even more curious. Why did one movie site give it a positive review and the other gave it a poor review? Well, just for me to discover that a plausible reason why the movie got a poor review from rotten tomatoes was due to the twisted ending of the movie. Oh yeah, this got me even more interested to watch the movie and find out for myself.
Remember Me happens to be a movie that displays the dysfunctionality of family drama and the great impact it could have in the life of children even when they get older. It is more like a quote I came across, which says
people can grow into the trauma they experienced as children.
With the acting from the various actors involved in the movie, one could denote that the idea of a perfect family where there are no issues or quarrels, problems, or even sadness is all a fairy tale that can only be fabricated or painted in the imagination of the human mind. But the best we can get is a loving family that will be there for us whether we need them or not, and despite all the shit we might go through in this world, they will still love us regardless. For me, I would say a loving family is a family that can truly express unconditional love.
The movie had its unique twist but what caught my interest was how reluctant Robert happened to be towards believing in the idea that love could probably be the thing he craves the most. Being the second son of a successful father, he has also been second to everything. Being the second to receive his father's love, second to be aware of anything, and second to be present at any gathering. Indirectly, this made him more relentless and less concerned about anything relating to his father since it felt like the man was more concerned with his business and his job than the wellbeing of his kids.
In the end, it was all a matter of misunderstanding and miscommunication, which happens to be the root of most conflict but the ending was quite emotional and twisted too, which made it more glaring for me to understand why rotten tomatoes gave the movie a poor review cause they didn't get the ending they were hoping for. Well, that's the beauty of some movies and nonetheless, the movie didn't deserve such a low percentage of 26.
