Love knows no bound and there isn't anything like a limit or restriction. The laws governing the walls of love are built with strong concrete within the heart of lovers, who have nothing but affection for one another. It is a beautiful thing this thing called love and people who have experienced it in the past try their best in holding it tight in order not to go through the journey of searching for it when it's far gone. This is the storyline of the movie YOU PEOPLE, but this time the movie decides to go a bit forward by using the clash of race between two races while telling the story of love.
Talking about racial segregation existing in the world is something that isn't strange anymore. Many have witnessed it and told the story and some have even died from its harshness. A major side effect this problem has given birth to is the notion that interracial marriage between blacks and whites can't work out and those involved will have a lot to scale through in order for it to work, at least that is what the movie says.
In the advent of telling this story, the movie made use of two phenomenal actors, one representing each race, in persons of Jonah Hill representing the whites, and Eddie Murphy representing the blacks. The two characters cross paths in the movie when Jonah Hill playing the character Ezra falls in love with Eddie Murphy's daughter and decides to take the bold step of asking for her hand in marriage. Ezra is a finance broker who runs a podcast on the side with his best friend. Although he is completely frustrated by his job in the financial world, he still stays jovial and alive whenever he records an episode for his podcast. It is more of a tale of being stuck in a maze and finally, you see a light at the end of the tunnel. This I can relate to. Ezra isn't only frustrated by his finance job but he is also dissatisfied by the new reality, he is absolutely lonely cause there is no spark of love in his life. Then everything changes when he meets Amira and falls madly in love with her.
The true mix in the movie begins when Ezra meets Amira's parents in order to seek their blessing in marrying their daughter but instead, her father decides to make his life a living hell, just to prove that he is no good match for his beloved daughter, not because he doesn't love her, but because he is white. More complicating and quite comic in a way is the fact that Amira's father isn't the only one causing harm to the couple's union, so is Ezra's mother. She becomes so obsessed with the idea that a totally new culture is going to be a part of her family, and not just any culture, a black and Muslim culture for that matter. This makes her dive deep into exploring more about black people and talking a lot about it. But what makes it sad is she fails to see Amira for the woman she is or even gets the chance to truly bond with her despite the amount of time they spend together.
The movie shared light on the possible problems inter-racial couples face from their family, well I can't completely say but what I can say is try it out. For the movie, I would give it a 6 out of 10 due to the funny sarcasm from the characters. It felt like a mixture of talented comedy actors in the world of filmmaking.
