Dear Hivers,
Today I bring to you a series with one of the most chaotic plots and lives I have ever seen.
Marty Byrde is an accountant who got caught up in a Mexican drug cartel dirty business. He co-owned a company with his partner and Best friend where they help the cartel launder money. His friend then made a mistake, he tried to steal from the cartel and they found out. He is executed and in desperation to save himself, Marty agreed to launder $8 Million in just a month; a near-impossible task.
Marty, together with his wife Wendy and 2 children Charlotte and Jonah set off from Chicago where they had lived all their lives to Ozark where Marty intends to fulfil the tasks of the cartel to save him and his family's lives.
Before they set out, Marty found out his wife was having an affair, though she wasn't aware at the start, this had caused a rift between them. But Marty's priority was to keep his family safe and he decides to keep his emotions aside and be more practical and rational. He knew he needed her to help keep the children safe.
The Ozark isn't what the Byrde had expected. Marty started out by seeking to buy and invest in local businesses he could use to launder money as fast as possible. But Ozark comes with its challenges — from the local drug dealers to petty locals, family disputes and even the FBI breathing down their necks.
Amidst the tons of challenges, Marty and Wendy comes up with a brilliant way to launder the money on time but just when he thought it might be over. The cartel comes down with over $50 million for laundering.
This meant they will be staying way longer than planned. It results in loads of chains of events and unwanted deaths. Things became way more chaotic than the Byrdes could have ever imagined.
Meet the Brydes
Marty Bryde played by Jason Bateman
Father, Genius... I believe Marty is the smartest man in the series. Time and again he escapes extremely tricky situations brilliantly. And something I admired most about him throughout the series is his ability to control his emotions. Regardless of the situation, he doesn't let his emotions get the better of him. He tries to be rational and practical at all times.
Wendy Byrde
Wendy played by Laura Linney was a vicious character.
Though she started quite passively, she turned out to be a force to reckon with.
She was the most ruthless yet efficient character. Personally, at some point, I felt she was being too much. She had quite the character twist even I didn't see coming.
Charlotte Byrde
Charlotte is the first daughter of the Byrdes. They were told by their mother some moments after they got to Ozark the truth about why they were there.
This was hard for Charlotte especially to accept, she was mostly rebellious at first but would grow up to be a lot more mature and of good contribution and even helping her parents run some of their businesses when they were out running sh*t.
Jonah Bryde
Jonah started cold, he was a major concern to his parents at first as they thought he might pick up some negative traits or attitudes.
He started with a fetish love for animals but then went on to learn money laundering after his father. Even though his family was against it.
In the later seasons, he started to become distant from his family, mostly as a result of his objection towards his mother's actions.
My thoughts and opinions
The story starts immediately and the viewer does not have to sit through countless episodes before the story gets going.
It is a gripping thriller where tension continues to build with each episode and each season.
People compare it to breaking bad only it doesn't have the slow start breaking bad had.
I was hooked all through the series and it's surely one of my favourites of all time.
Have you seen Ozark?
