Recently, I have been really into animated shows because I just realized how good some of them are. After seeing the last season of Rick and Morty a few weeks ago, I was itching to see more animated shows no matter how old they were. I had seen the older seasons of Rick and Morty in 2021 and I loved the show but after seeing this final season, I felt a void that needed to be filled by more animated shows. I could not afford to make a wrong choice so I asked for recommendations from friends and decided to go ahead and start seeing Bojack Horseman, which I had an open tab for on my browser for months.
Bojack Horseman is no new show. It premiered back in 2014 and is six seasons long so, yes, I am very late to the party. The fact that it is an old show almost discouraged me from seeing it because I thought it did not age well. Despite having this show on hold for a long while, I did not start it off on a great note. In fact, I really thought the first two episodes were boring but I was willing to give it a chance. I mean, the show is certified fresh on rotten tomatoes with a critic score of 93% and an audience score of 96%. I still had faith in the human race and I believed that many people did not just like a crappy show. I did not want to be among the 4% that would think it wasn't a great show so I gave it a chance and it fortunately became really enjoyable after the second episode.
Bojack Horseman is a show that knows what it wants to express and does so without holding back too much. For me, the biggest win for this show is the fact that it is raw. Even in the absurdity of the setting, Bojack Horseman is a show that is oddly relatable in the real world. It's shocking that just a decade ago, shows could be so raw and real but nowadays people are too sensitive and any push can get a show cancelled as has been the case. Of course, this is mostly because of the critics but most normal people love when shows dare to be interesting by pushing their limits. Seeing this show being free to express almost anything is very refreshing.
A big factor that makes Bojack Horseman a successful show is the use pf metaphors and Hyperbole. From the soundtracks to the interactions, this show is filled with the most absurd references to human experiences. I noticed this first with the soundtracks and I have to say that it is very creative. I can't say for sure but I don't think there's any song played in the first two seasons that wasn't a sort of joke or a way to ridicule the situation. It's something that I have seen in just a few shows like Regular Show and it can never go wrong in my opinion.
