Finally, after restarting and many sittings, I finally finished the new Fast and Furious movie creatively titled "Fast X". Initially, I did not want to talk about this film at all but given that it is the 10th film of the franchise, I just felt compelled, for some reason, to make this review. I mean, this franchise started back in 2001 with the first movie that was about an undercover cop and something like truck thieves I think. 22 years later, 10 movies have been released with at least one more confirmed to be here soon. It's a big thing when you get to the tenth movie so I had to write about it.

Ok where to start. I wouldn't say that I'm a fan of the Fast and Furious franchise or anything close to that. I've watched almost (if not) all of the movies and I enjoy the action but I don't go about thinking about how great of a franchise it is if at all that is the case. Despite what I may think, Fast and Furious is undoubtedly one of the most popular franchises of our time. Having 10 main films is already a huge deal but this franchise also has a spin-off, some short films and a Netflix series that I just heard about while writing this. Fast X is merely the latest addition and, if I may guess, it had a lot of expectations to meet.
Well, I did not have any expectations for this film except pure entertainment. Of course, I was entertained by this action flick to a satisfactory level. This movie is something I would define as being fast paced without a lot of necessary dialogues. The action literally never ends. If that is the type of thing that appeals to you, then this movie would be a good watch.
The thing about focusing a lot on action is that it can become overly absurd while other aspects of the film suffer. It's not everyday that you see one guy take out many armed men after lifting a car with one hand. Sure, this is how every other action film works because it's all just fiction and anything goes so I wouldn't really talk about that. Still it's worth mentioning that the side effect of this excess concentration on action is that other things, like character development and storytelling, suffer.

Speaking on character development, the villain of the story, Dante, had some charisma mostly thanks to the actor Jason Momoa but he lacked in substance, in a sense. To be fair, we were given a background on this character so he wasn't just thrown at our faces as a random villain, but the development as a whole was not given so much depth. The same can be said about certain side characters. When characters are not properly developed, they end up shallow, unrelatable and annoying, and no amount of action can make them as interesting as intended.
The Storytelling is a little bit above average in my opinion. Like I said, I'm not that much of a big fan of the franchise so I don't know a lot about how the story is always told. I can't say for sure how this whole thing went from being simply about cars to the gang getting hired for complex international missions. Still, I have to say that I am impressed with how the story manages to centre around the theme of cars and, of course, family. The gang and most people they face are exceptionally skilled drivers with sophisticated vehicles that work well for any type of mission but the family theme is arguably more important for the franchise at this point.
Yes, family. For years, there have been memes made that have lightly mocked the whole family focus especially when it comes to Dom. Hilarious as they are, the memes just highlights the major thing this franchise has going for itself. In this film, Dom becomes even more of a family man as his family expands and he has to save them all. The main focus was on his son, Little Brian, who finds himself in a conflict inherited from his parents. Little Brian's involvement is unique because he is targeted by a man who wants to hurt Dom by destroying his cherished family given that he blames Dom for destroying his. It's quite the theme for this story which is why it pains me that the story was not given a little bit more focus.
