I recently watched The Nun II finally uncovered the continuation of a story they left open-ended in 2018. After five years, we hear again about this film representative of the Warrenverse or Warren Universe, whatever you want to call it, I like it either way; it's like Marvel Horror Universe, but not manipulated by Disney.
I'll tell you what my impressions were of this second installment, I remember when I saw The Nun I five years ago. It was at the cinema (this was one of the few horror movies I've seen in a theater recently) with a friend, we embarked on the journey of scaring each other for a while and eating popcorn. The movie, as I expected, was not scary, however, I liked the story, I think it could have been better if the sequence had had more jumpscares..
I don't remember feeling bored, like with the first Annabelle movie or La Llorona (which by the way, that movie was complete hogwash. The worst of the Warren universe), I just felt entertained, and that's it, nothing special, the only interesting thing was the story.
With The Nun II it was something different, I think it was the amount of jumpscare they added, or that the narrative had more emotion and action than the first one, but there was a problem I couldn't help noticing; and it had to do with the plot sequence.

Recientemente vi The Nun II finalmente destaparon la continuación de una historia que dejaron con final abierto en el 2018. Después de cinco años, volvemos a saber de esta película representativa del Warrenverse o Universo Warren, como quieran llamarlo, me gusta cualquiera de las dos formas; es como universo Marvel del terror, pero que no está manipulado por Disney.
Te comentaré como fueron mis impresiones en esta segunda entrega, recuerdo cuando vi The Nun I hace cinco años. Fue en el cine (esta fue una de las pocas películas de terror que he visto en una sala recientemente) con una amiga, emprendimos el viaje de asustarnos un rato y comer palomitas. La película, como lo esperé, no dio miedo, sin embargo me gustó mucho la historia, creo que pudo haber sido mejor si la secuencia hubiese tenido más jumpscares.
No recuerdo haberme sentido aburrido, como con la primera película de Annabelle o con La Llorona (que por cierto, esa película fue una completa bazofia. La peor del universo Warren), solo me sentí entretenido, y ya, nada especial, lo único interesante fu la historia.
Con la The Nun II fue algo diferente, creo que fue la cantidad de jumpscare que agregaron, o que la narrativa tuvo más emoción y acción que la primera, pero había un problema que no podía dejar de notar; y tenía que ver con la secuencia argumental.

Both American films are part of the gothic horror genre, the first one was directed by Corin Hardy and the script was written by James Wan and Gary Dauberman, while the second part was directed by Michael Chaves and the script was written by Akela Cooper and Ian B. Goldberg. The cast of the first film includes Taissa Farmiga playing Sister Irene; the main character, along with Demián Bichir as Father Burke, Jonas Bloquet as Maurice or "The Frenchman" and Bonnie Aarons as Valak, the antagonist character of this story.
In the second installment, we also have Taissa Farmiga as Irene, Storm Reid as Debra, Jonas Bloquet as Maurice, Katelyn Rose Downey as Sophie, Anna Popplewell as Kate; Sophie's mother, and Bonnie Aarons again as Valak.
The photography in the first installment was done by Maxime Alexandre and the music by Abel Korzeniowski, while in the second one, Tristan Nyby was in charge of the photographic part and Marco Beltrami was in charge of the music.
The production companies working on both films were Atomic Monster, New Line Cinema, The Safran Company, and Warner Bros Pictures as producer and distributor. The first film was released on September 7, 2018, with a running time of 96 minutes, while the second film was released on September 8 of the same year with 110 minutes in length. Between the two they managed to collect $599,200,352 taking the first one the amount of $365,600,000 and the second one $233,600,352.

Plot
The story of the first film takes place in a cloistered abbey in Romania. A nun commits suicide at the bottom of the window of her room, which activates the Vatican alerts and sends a priest expert in demons; Father Burke along with a novice about to take her vows, named Irene. Arriving at the nearby village, they are guided by a peasant who shows them the entrance to the place, the nuns can not leave the abbey, so the locals leave them supplies in a special place inside the convent so that the nuns can go down to pick it up.
Once inside, they are greeted by the abbess, who mysteriously does not show her face to the guests, but allows them to stay since the nuns were in their vespers time. Father Burke and Sister Irene stay in a small house next to the abbey, as they begin their investigation, they notice strange things. The place is infested by something evil and fetid that overshadows even the most inhospitable corners. The heroes of the story realize the convent is tainted by the force of a demon named Valak who was held there by the nuns.
The father and the novice nun realize that the place has always been desolate, and they will have to face terrible things that will test their faith. Fortunately, with the help of Maurice "The Frenchman", the nun and the father manage to defeat the demon with an ancient relic containing the blood of Jesus Christ and bury him back in the prison where he was confined, or so they thought...
The next movie is a sequel to the first one, and this one tells us about Valak's return years later. It all begins with a priest who is immolated alive in a church in France, the Vatican is put on alert again and they call the only living person who could defeat the demon since Father Burke died of cholera.
Sister Irene, hesitant to return to face that from which she almost did not come out alive, decides to do it for the sake of her faith, and together with a nun; Sister Debra, they decide to undertake the journey and begin the investigation. On this occasion Valak seeks a greater power so as not to be easily defeated, Sister Irene investigates it and finds clues along the way.
The traces lead both nuns to a boarding school in France, where Maurice is working, and they realize that there the most disturbing things are beginning. The demon disguised as a nun lurks again and this time he returns stronger and deadlier than ever. Now uncorrupted, Sister Irene must cling more than ever to her faith to stop this terrible evil before it is too late.
Will she succeed in stopping Valak without losing her life along the way?
La trama
La historia de la primera película, se desarrolla en una abadía de clausura en Rumania. Una monja se suicida al pie de la ventana de su habitación, lo que activa las alertas del Vaticano y envía a un sacerdote experto en demonios; El Padre Burke junto con una novicia apunto de tomar sus votos, llamada Irene. El padre y la monja novicia se dan cuenta que el sitio siempre estuvo desolado, y tendrán que enfrentar cosas terribles que pondrán a prueba su fe. Afortunadamente, con la ayuda de Maurice “El Francés”, la monja y el padre logran vencer al demonio con una reliquia antigua que contenía la sangre de Jesucristo y sepultarlo de nuevo a la prisión donde estaba confinado, o eso pensaron…
La siguiente película es una secuela de la primera, y esta nos habla del regreso de Valak años después. Todo comienza con un sacerdote que es inmolado vivo en una iglesia en Francia, el Vaticano se pone en alerta de nuevo y llaman a la única persona viva que pudo vencer al demonio, ya que el Padre Burke murió de cólera.
La hermana Irene, dudosa de volver a enfrentar ese del que casi no sale con vida, decide hacerlo por el bien de su fe, y junto con una monja; la hermana Debra, deciden emprender el viaje y comenzar la investigación. En esta ocasión Valak busca un poder mayor para no ser derrotado fácilmente, la hermana Irene indaga en ello y encuentra pistas en el camino.
Los rastros llevan a ambas monjas a un internado en Francia, donde se encuentra Maurice trabajando, y se dan cuenta que allí las cosas más perturbadoras están comenzando. El demonio disfrazado de monja acecha de nuevo y esta vez vuelve más fuerte y mortífero que nunca. Ahora, sin corromperse, la hermana Irene deberá aferrarse más que nunca a su fe para poder detener este terrible mal antes de que sea demasiado tarde.

My opinion
While neither film was impressive to me, they both have a distinct point to offer in terms of sequence, plot, and narrative. The origin of The Nun came from an anecdote the Warrens told in their files about a cursed church where the ghost of a nun appeared, from there James Wan drew inspiration and created a new character for his horror universe.
This demon makes his first appearance in The Conjuring II, then two prequels dedicated solely to him are created, where we will learn more about his origin, his way of destroying, thinking, and his intentions. A truly well-structured antagonist in my opinion.
With this in mind, I found the first installment a bit bland. The narrative sequence was rather weak, although it can't be denied that the story was intriguing; in fact, all Warren Universe movies are interesting because they are based on real events, and that's an ingredient that the viewer savors with pleasure. It is for this reason that they are so popular, not because of their narrative quality or good graphics, but because they were recorded by people who existed and were dedicated to hunting demons and spirits.
However, adapting all of this to horror movies while stimulating little critical acclaim is quite questionable. While not all of the Warren Universe films have the same effect, The Nun lags far behind; along with Annabelle and of course at the bottom rung is La Llorona.
That said, even though neither film deserves an Oscar, I think the plot is very well done. The first installment seems to me to have a more convincing script, while in the second one, everything was resolved so easily and effortlessly, heading a bit towards the unreal.
In the first one, however, we are going to find a boring narrative with few jumpscares and truly impressive scenes, unlike in the second film there are more details in terms of action, desire to scare us, shocking events, and good camera shortcuts, I'm not saying that in the first film the photography was not excellent it is very good; with those gothic details that imbue the horror, however, I think the second film did a better job in that aspect.
I have no complaints about the acting in both features, Taissa Farmiga does a spectacular job, as does her sister who plays Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring. The rest of the cast was also phenomenal, every detail was well done and the costumes were wonderful.
As with both films, the surprise factor that resolves the story comes with an unexpected twist. This is a characteristic feature in all the films of the Warrenverse, making us believe that the evil is already sentenced, but then the ending makes us understand that it is not so, that this is just the beginning of something that will happen later. This is how so many projects have been made and maybe we will witness a third sequel, who knows, that's what I could deduce from the post-credits scenes.

Aunque ninguna de las dos películas fue impresionante para mí, ambas tienen un punto distinto que ofrecer en cuanto a secuencia, trama y narrativa. El origen de The Nun provino de una anécdota que los Warrens comentaron en sus expedientes sobre una iglesia maldita donde aparecía el fantasma de una monja, de allí James Wan sacó la inspiración y creó un personaje nuevo para su universo del terror.
Este demonio hace su primera aparación en The Conjuring II, luego se crean dos precuelas dedicadas únicamente a él, donde conoceremos más de su origen, su manera de destruir, pensar e intenciones. Un verdadero antagonista bien estructurado a mí parecer.
Teniendo esto en cuenta, la primera entrega me pareció algo sosa. Bastante floja la secuencia narrativa, aunque no se puede negar que la historia era intrigante; de hecho, todas las películas del universo Warren son interesantes porque están basadas en hechos reales, y eso es un ingrediente que el espectador saborea con gusto. Es por este motivo que son tan populares, no por su calidad narrativa o buen manejo de gráficos, sino porque fueron hechos registrados por personas que de verdad existieron y se dedicaban a la caza de demonios y espíritus.
Sin embargo, adaptar todo esto al cine de terror estimulando poco agrado en la crítica es bastante cuestionable. Aunque no todas las películas del Universo Warren causan el mismo efecto, definitivamente las de The Nun se quedan muy atrás; junto con las de la Annabelle y por supuesto en el último escalafón se halla La Llorona.
Dicho esto, a pesar de que ninguna de las dos películas se merezcan un Oscar, creo que la trama está muy bien hecha. La primera entrega me parece que tiene un guion más convincente, mientras que en la segunda todo se resolvía tan fácil y sin ningún esfuerzo, dirigiéndose un poco hacia lo irreal.
En la primera, sin embargo, vamos a encontrar una narrativa aburrida con pocos jumpscares y escenas verdaderamente impresionantes, no como en la segunda película que existen más detalles en cuanto a la acción, ganas de asustarnos, sucesos impactantes y buenos atajos de cámara, no digo que en la primera película la fotografía no haya sido excelente, de hecho, es muy buena; con esos detalles góticos que imbuyen al horror, no obstante creo que la segunda película hizo un mejor trabajo en ese aspecto.
No tengo quejas de la actuación en ambos largometrajes, Taissa Farmiga hace un trabajo espectacular, al igual que su hermana quien hace de Lorraine Warren en las películas del The Conjuring. El resto del elenco también estuvo fenomenal, cada detalle estuvo bien hecho y los vestuarios fueron maravillosos.
Como sucede en ambas películas, el factor sorpresa que resuelve la historia llega con giro inesperado. Esto es un rasgo característico en todas las películas del Warrenverse, haciéndonos que creer que el mal ya está sentenciado, pero después el final nos hace entender que no es así, que este es solo el principio de algo que sucederá luego. Es así como se han hecho tantos proyectos y quizás seremos testigos de una tercera secuela, quien sabe, eso fue lo que pude deducir en las escenas post-créditos.

Conclusions
Both The Nun I and II have their weaknesses in terms of script and story arc. The former is more compelling, but lazy, while the latter has more action, but its narrative arc focuses a lot on chance. Both have good quality photography; with those grim and gruesome scenes that make the hair on the back of your neck stand on end. The performances are excellent and I have no complaints about the characters, as well as the costumes.
If I have to answer the question: Which one entertained me the most? I would definitely go for the second movie, not that the first one wasn't entertaining, but I didn't see much of a desire to scare me and, besides, there are so many uninteresting parts that I don't even remember anymore; and I have a very good memory.
Indeed, because they are both from the Warrenuniverse and because they offered twists that sublimely captured my attention, I recommend both movies, but if you are not familiar with this world, I recommend you to watch The Conjuring II first and then continue with the first premise.

Tanto de The Nun I y II tienen sus puntos débiles en cuanto a guion y arco argumental. La primera es más convincente, pero perezosa, mientras que la segunda tiene más acción, pero su arco narrativo se centra mucho a la casualidad. Ambas tienen una buena calidad fotográfica; con esas escenas lúgubres y espantosas que de verdad te ponen los pelos de punta. Las actuaciones son excelentes y no tengo quejas de los personajes, así como tampoco de los vestuarios.
Si debo responder a la pregunta: ¿Cuál me entretuvo más? Me iría definitivamente por la segunda película, no es que la primera no sea entretenida, pero no le vi muchas ganas de querer asustarme y, además, hay tantas partes poco interesantes que ya ni me acuerdo; y eso que tengo muy buena memoria.
En efecto, por ser ambas del Warrenuniverse y porque ofrecieron giros que captaron mi atención sublimemente, recomiendo ambas películas, pero si no estás familiarizado con este mundo, te recomiendo ver primero The Conjuring II y luego continuar con la primera premisa.
