Hello friends of this community of cinephiles, I don't remember having written here before, but in case this is my first post I would like to introduce myself, I am @victor2356 and although I am not an expert in cinema, from time to time I like to watch a film or two, especially I am a lover of the classics, I like to analyze them and delve into various aspects of it. Today I want to appeal to nostalgia and dust off what I consider a jewel of our cinema, of Venezuelan cinema, a work directed by the distinguished and sadly deceased Román Chalbaud, I'm talking about Cangrejo (crab), a film that at the time became a great success at the box office and helped to raise awareness about what money can achieve in high places, perpetuating injustice.
Hola amigos de esta comunidad de cinéfilos, no recuerdo haber escrito antes aquí, pero en caso de que sea mi primera publicación me gustaría presentarme, soy @victor2356 y aunque no soy experto en cine, de vez en cuando me gusta ver algún que otro film, en especial soy amante de los clásicos, me gusta analizarlos y profundizar en varios aspectos del mismo. Hoy quiero apelar a la nostalgia y desempolvar lo que considero una joya del cine nuestro, del cine venezolano, una obra dirigida por el distinguido y lamentablemente fallecido Román Chalbaud, les hablo de Cangrejo, una película que en su momento llegó a ser un gran éxito en taquilla y que ayudó a despertar consciencia sobre lo que el dinero puede llegar a lograr en las altas esferas, perpetuando la injusticia.
The film is based on one of the cases of the book Four Crimes four powers by PTJ detective Fermín Mármol León, this is specifically the last case, where a group of young people from the high society of Caracas, kidnap a twelve year old boy to collect the ransom from his parents, among the criminals was even the boy's own brother, but the situation is complicated when the boy dies of asphyxiation after being locked for hours in the trunk of the car, even so the boys try to collect the ransom. Detective Leon, wonderfully played by Miguel Angel Landa, puts all his efforts to discover the truth of what happened, but unfortunately he could not prevent the family of the young people involved to use their economic power to remove him from the case, thus obtaining the unjust freedom for the criminals who were even taken out of the country.
La película está basada en uno de los casos del libro Cuatro Crímenes cuatro poderes del detective de la PTJ, Fermín Mármol León, este es específicamente el último caso, donde un grupo de jóvenes de la alta sociedad caraqueña, secuestra a un niño de doce años para cobrar el rescate a sus padres, entre los delincuentes estaba incluso el propio hermano del niño, pero la situación se complica cuando el niño muere por asfixia luego de haber estado encerrado por horas en el maletero del carro, aún así los muchachos intentan cobrar el rescate. El detective León, maravillosamente interpretado por Miguel Ángel Landa, pone todo su empeño hasta descubrir la verdad de lo sucedido, pero lamentablemente no pudo evitar que la familia de los jóvenes implicados usaran su poder económico para que lo apartaran del caso, obteniendo así la injusta libertad para los delincuentes a quienes incluso sacaron del país.
Despite being a low budget film and not having too many resources to analyze, it is worth watching and analyzing mainly for its story, which is quite faithful to the book. We can't say that it has aged well, what happens is that, like most Venezuelan films of that time, this one has a very slow pace at the beginning, but it becomes more dynamic from the appearance of Commissioner Leon on screen, when he is teaching a class and tells his students that the law does not distinguish between economic, political and social status, something that is clearly contradicted at the end of the plot.
A pesar de ser una película de bajo presupuesto y de no tener demasiados recursos para analizar vale la pena verla y analizar más que todo por su historia, la cual es bastante fiel al libro. Eso sí, no podemos decir que haya envejecido bien, lo que sucede es que, al igual que la mayoría de películas venezolanas de esa época esta tiene un ritmo muy lento al inicio, pero se va haciendo más dinámica desde la aparición del comisario León en pantalla, cuando está dando una clase y le dice a sus alumnos que la ley no distingue entre estatus económicos, políticos y sociales, algo que claramente quedó contradicho al final de la trama
Miguel Ángel Landa gives a brilliant performance, followed by the performance of Guillermo Dávila as one of the kidnappers, and in fact there is a scene worth highlighting where both characters interact, it is almost impossible not to put yourself in the shoes of Commissioner León in the face of the arrogance and arrogance of Dávila's character, Landa managed to convey the frustration felt by his character, the rage and helplessness that must be generated by knowing the truth and not being able to prove it because there is a power beyond your capabilities, the power of money that the parents of the criminals had, with which they could “clean” files and reputations.
Miguel Ángel Landa hace una actuación brillante, seguida de la actuación de Guillermo Dávila como uno de los secuestradores, y de hecho hay una escena digna de resaltar donde ambos personajes interactúan, es casi imposible no ponerse en los zapatos del comisario León ante la arrogancia y soberbia del personaje de Dávila, Landa logró transmitir la frustración que sentía su personaje, la rabia y la impotencia que debe generar el conocer la verdad y no poder demostrarla por que existe un poder más allá de tus capacidades, el poder del dinero que tenían los padres de los delincuentes, con el cual podían "limpiar" expedientes y reputaciones.
As I told you this film aged very badly in terms of its resources, the photography is almost null as well as the soundtrack, obviously it is not a great film but it serves to pass the time on a weekend, plus it has a pretty interesting story that keeps you alert of what will happen next as there are certain advances in the investigation of the detective. I particularly consider that both this movie and the following one, Cangre II, which is actually a prequel, should have a refreshing, that is to say, that they should have a remake. Well, with nothing more to add for now, I bid you farewell until next time, but not before thanking you for your attention.
Tal como les dije esta película envejeció muy mal en cuanto sus recursos, la fotografía es casi nula al igual que la banda sonora, obviamente no es un gran film pero sirve para pasar el rato en un fin de semana, además de que cuanta con una historia bastante interesante que te mantiene alerta de lo que sucederá a continuación conforme hay ciertos avances en al investigación del detective. Considero particularmente que tanto esta película como la siguiente, Cangre II que es en realidad una precuela deberían tener un refrescamiento, es decir, que tengan un remake. Y bien, sin más nada que añadir por ahora, me despido hasta una próxima ocasión, no sin antes agradecer por su atención.
