I watched it last night so I will try to make this spoiler free. I said try,I dislike doing spoiler free reviews.
I kinda think it’s just that such reviews happened to the latest Thor movie, considering that now it’s only 2 % above the “hated” Thor:Dark World. I didn’t hate it.
Personally,I have so many grievances with Love and Thunder but I will try to be objective as much as possible.
The film is basically just…there. It doesn’t really affect much of Phase 4 of MCU and I think it demonstrated why Taika Waititi may not be a director suitable for Thor. I stated many times before that Ragnarok was far too comedic for my liking and especially for the storyline it was trying to express....
Well Love and Thunder is pretty much almost as comedic. Ragnarok actually made me laugh from time to time, but watching Thor being an idiot over and over again didn’t actually do any favors in this latest release.
I get there are those who like more comedic Thor. You will like this film then.
I will start with positives. Natalie Portman was a stand out here.
She effortlessly played the part of Lady Thor which was to expected really, she is a good actress. She is enjoyable in every scene and her chemistry with Chris is off the charts.
The depiction of the gods is quite amusing. And Zeus was hillarious. Vain, egoistical, uncaring, hedonistic……really makes you understand why Gorr wants to slaughter them all.
Now for parts I didn’t like:
You see,it’s not the fact that Gorr doesn’t look like his comic counterpart. It’s that he’s not nearly as threatening. I remember being told about Gorr the Butcher when he first came out as one of the most horrifying villains to ever trouble Thor. Gorr here is just…there.
It’s a waste of Bale’s talent as he basically plays an over the top villain with a very symphatetic backstory but delivers none of the menace or gore that Gorr is supposed to bring. There are lovely moments with him. Well played and well done but those are just moments. As a villain in general,he disappoints me.
So here we reach the weakness of Waititi. He is great for comedy. But since when is a story about the end of the world or maniac slaughtering gods meant to be a comedy?
So I do believe that ratings that this film received is well-deserved. I respect that there are many who enjoy more comedic apporach to Thor but I am simply not one of them.
There are beautiful moments in this film. Some scenes were really good and made me feel for certain characters.
But overall? I think they should reconsider the Thor franchise if they ever want to make another movie about him.
Cheers.
