The Wen(And How) of The Mass Adoption for Hive

in #hive-1679222 years ago

Mass adoption has somehow become a "crypto-related" thing that it creates, at least in my case, both excitement and frustration at the same time. On one hand, it is exciting to see blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies changing lives for some of us in the industry...

...but on the other, it's frustrating to see that the pace by which crypto is actually disrupting what it is supposed to disrupt is actually quite slow.

Hive is a terrific project, I've been here since day one, and I have something like three years of experience in dealing with Steem before Hive came out and the comparison between is futile, it's like putting Joe Biden side by side with Dwayne Johnson in any sports competition you may think of.

Neither Hive nor Steem has yet attained mass adoption. We are still a quite "remote community" aiming to get big and strong. So, what should a social media app have, or be like, in order to attain mass adoption? Well, here's what chatGPT answered to this question:

A social media app needs several key factors to attain mass adoption:

User Experience: A simple and intuitive interface that appeals to users and makes it easy to use.

Unique Features: Offer unique and compelling features that set the app apart from others and provide value to users.

Network Effect: Encourage users to invite their friends and build a large network, creating a virtuous cycle of growth.

Viral Marketing: Utilize word-of-mouth marketing and incentivize users to share the app with others.

Trust & Privacy: Foster a sense of trust with users by being transparent about data usage and providing strong privacy features.

Consistent Innovation: Continuously develop and improve the app to keep users engaged and attract new ones.

Good Reputation: Maintain a positive image and reputation by addressing user concerns and providing quality customer support.

Now, why have I addressed the topic from a "social media app" point of view and not a community or just a simple blockchain project one? It's because in this post I'm mostly interested in tackling the social media side of Hive, not just its "blockchain capabilities".

Important question...

Is the mass adoption going to be brought to us by @leofinance? Well, if you read one of @khaleelkazi's latest posts regarding the everything app that the team is working on, you will then realize that this might be the case. It is Leofinance that introduced leoinfra and made onboarding for Hive look and feel mainstream, so will have to give them credit for that too.

But...

Let's look a bit at the requirements that a social media app needs in order to get mainstream... So, among others, the everything app will have to have a great UX and I bet the everything app won't lack that. When it comes to unique features, I wouldn't bother much about it... Earning crypto while being social is the epitome of what a crypto social media can do at the moment.

The network effect already is there for Hive, as I see plenty of users already, especially in Latin America, who have played an important role for that matter. These guys make for the best subcommunity that Hive has. Period. However, and this one is a big however, for the network effect to reach impactful levels we definitely need viral marketing

This one is something I have emphasized on for quite a few years. I know that @taskmaster4450 said multiple times that development is going to be playing the role of the marketing some of us were asking for, but I would still put cash out of my own pocket for a bit of "viral marketing", if possible.

All the famous social media apps have had plenty of that and it probably weighs heavy on their mass adoption success. I remember Twitter somehow had a damn movie wrapped around it soon after it was launched. I forgot the name of it, though, it was about some guy opening a mobile restaurant or something like that and tweeting his location every time he moved...

I don't know if Khal realizes but the mass adoption of Hive might lay on his shoulders and I hope he'll deliver it soon. What do you guys think of that?

Thanks for your attention,
Adrian

I'd lay money that Joe Biden could smoke The Rock in a child sniffing contest...

He's a pro on that one for sure.

one practical problem is that there is a very limited amount of "free" tokens foe accounts. We need dacter to be released for this @aggroed, otherwise we simply can't handle the influx of users if they aren't willing to pay money (which they won't)

I honestly haven't thought about that.

yeah it's a bit of a bummer. But we don't need millions of users in a matter of several months, 500k+ would be pretty awesome over a year or so! And then of course you have to ask, where do you see those users? If it's blogging it will be hard, but Splinterlands has already I believe like a million users?

It puzzles me why Hive is not getting more traction.
Could be we live in a cocon here at Hive, only we see the possibilities.
For others it still is complicated.

Many don't know about us and some that do know(crypto personalities included) don't seem to be interested, thus we kind of live in a cocoon for now.

people are only interested if everyone else is...hence the need for mass adoption.

True, it takes a single app like a Twitter-like microblogging app to blow the entire Hive ecosystem up.

Si ce mai asteptam? Un pic de marketing si o aplicatie de mobil cat de cat OK ar fi facut minuni pt Hive.

Probably never🤣

Optimism overlord:))

heheheh

From the social media side, viral marketing would definitely help in mass adoption because we will be able to reach a much wider audience and with features like Leoinfra they can easily onboard without worrying about their keys or anything in between. Awareness is critical for mass adoption.

True. Marketing opens the door for visibility and leofinfra removes the hustles of dealing with blockchain social media such as Hive which can be quite a pain in the ass for new comers.

I find this very thought provoking. Particularly as it reminds me of the main reason I first became interested in Hive. Which was as a better alternative to Facebook.

Now that I have been hanging around for a few moons, I have started to wonder how I should make a stronger contribution to the network. And I don't have concrete plans just yet. But this post, together with recent posts about Twitter is certainly stirring my imagination.

Especially the thought of "viral marketing". Because Dbuzz and leofinance Threads seem to provide new opportunities. So I am going to explore how to incorporate them into (or transition from) my traditional websites.

Thanks Adrian for your continuing inspiration.

Fun fact: I joined Hive(former Steem) something like six months after I permanently deleted my facebook and instagram account.

I just stopped using facebook as a whole. They are thieves.

@khaleelkazi has been working very hard and the results show in how active leofinance is already. There is still so much to accomplish and I trust his leadership. For not we'll keep stacking Hive and HBD.

In a country as big as Brazil, I wonder when Hive becomes something well known around here. It will be a real blast.

I wish it will be a blast everywhere.
