Life Without a Cell Phone

Majority of young people are addicted to their cell phones, I happen to be no exception. I spent about Twenty minutes last night frantically searching for my phone. I flipped the entire room, checked, and double checked. I knew it couldn't have vanished into thin air because I just had it. I decided to take a breaking from searching for it and just do something else. I wanted to see how I would do until my phone turned up. Which it later did.

This had me wondering what would happen if we suddenly all had our cell phone taken away. I have lost a few cell phones back in Uni days, mostly stolen from me because I am anything but careless. It was a normal experience especially as a new student to lose a few things of value to someone who thought they had better use for it. I have two distinct stories about losing my phones and I am willing to share one of them.

My first experience was at a sleep over. I had a senior colleague who loved me and took care of me as a fresher and I visited her often. This particular night, she had a few of her girlfriends over so we turned it to a slumber night. We played games, watched movies on one of the girls' laptop, a new laptop by the way, then went to bed.

Fast forward to midnight, one of the girls woke up for a bathroom break, she reached for her phone but couldn't find it, then she turned and saw the door was wide open. We had been robbed. They stole about five cell phones and a laptop from our place that night. I remember the laptop girl crying and saying they should have at least left her new laptop. Um, why would a thief show you that much kindness?

Later in the day we all went hiking. We ate, laughed and cried on the top of the mountain as we strategized on how to bounce back. Students getting robbed and stolen from was a regular thing back then, especially at the area my friend lived. The locals always took a chance to take advantages of the students. We reported to the police but of course nothing happened.

Some were of the theory that the person who stole from us used some kind of juju to hypnotize us, making us sleep so deep we didn't notice any movements until they were gone. I wanted to believe that because my friend, Ola, who owned the apartment was not a deep sleeper at all. Every other time I visited her, it didn't matter the time, she would wake up if I made any movements like a bathroom break. But that night, she was gone with the rest of us.

Here is a little twist. Ola happened to be the only one whose phone wasn't taken. How? Because she had the habit of tucking her phone under pillow right before she sleeps off. Yup.

Thank you for stopping by. ❤️
