People fear rains in Chennai

in #hive-1679222 months ago

During November and December, there are heavy rains in Chennai and whenever we have continuous rains for days together, people fear in Chennai. The main reason is that we don't have a proper water drainage system and many buildings are on top of lakes and encroachments. The city's waterways are not planned very well, and politicians don't care. Only in recent years, has this been a big problem. I don't remember seeing such floods in Chennai before 10 years. Maybe it was there but we never feared flood every year.

In most places, the roads were continuously raised to a higher level, making the houses go down. The situation is more like after 20 years the level of roads will be higher and the houses will be lower. This is another problem that we are dealing with bad administration. This is another big reason why we get water inside our house. Last year during the floods my house was also affected and we had rainwater coming inside the house through the ground. I had to then spend a lot of money to do some preventive measures.

Chennai should learn from the Netherlands

In the Netherlands floods were a problem a few decades back. When I talk to one of my friends in the Netherlands, he used to tease me saying that we should be hiring a few Dutch engineers to fix our waterways. We have so many good waterbodies in Chennai but they are all now sewage where people mix their drainage water into that making them contaminated and unusable.

I wish we had waterways similar to how it is in several other countries including the Netherlands. However big the rains are in the Netherlands, my friend used to tell me that they don't get floods easily. We have to do something like that in Chennai.

Companies moving their primary base away from Chennai

This is a very common thing that can happen in places where red alert is a common problem. There is no point in asking investors to come and open companies in Chennai. We have so many problems that need attention. Before we call investors we have to make sure we have enough facilities available. During November and December, it is hard to predict what can happen and many companies have moved to a better city. Servers are the first things that are moved by the companies. My company also moved the servers that were in Chennai to another City in India to be on the safer side.

Going to native

For some people, Chennai is just a workplace and they stay in apartments where rainwater is heavy. When it comes to the last two months of the year, they go back to their native and come back again when the rains have settled down. Water alone is not the problem we also have power problems and power cuts. Every year people also die because of such bad weather conditions due to various reasons. We cannot do much about all this but if the government thinks it can do something it won't because it is not a big deal for them and they would like to do politics with this subject.

If the government prioritizes long-term solutions, like improving drainage systems and restoring natural water bodies, Chennai could prevent these annual disasters. Unfortunately, until then, it seems like people are left to cope with the consequences on their own, as you rightly pointed out.

We also don't have proper drainage system in my city as well, last rain effects are still there and we may experience more rains in the coming days.

Quite the way life is, and there are some part of the world where people are looking for rain as it were

As far as I read it, looks like you are talking about Asunción (Paraguay) and other cities of my country 😆

Lol looks like a similar problem. 😀

I guess here is bigger because a lot of people died in the streets going home or work.

Chennai is to be blamed for all this. At this point its clearly the fault of the authorities and govt bodies. I mean ever since 2015 the flooding has been a yearly occurance and the intensity is also increasing.
I am accept the fact that 2015 we weren't prepared but it's been almost 9 years and nothing has changed.

My company is also scouting for an office in Coimbatore, Trichy and Madurai.

Moving to other cities is better. Let the other cities grow. I don't know when we will get relief from these politicians.

We won't, the politicians feed on our misery. There is no end to it.
These floods and droughts are political tools for them to retain their vote banks. A well-planned drainage system would cost money but may permanently solve the flooding problem. Then, they may have to fight some other problem that they may or may not be able to solve.

I have made similar arguments, and have been called Sanghi for having an opinion.

Lesson learned - Never argue with someone enrolled in any political party. 😂😂😂

Lol I stopped political arguments 7 years back. That's when I quit Facebook and life is more peaceful. 🙂

Quitting FB was the best decision ever.

Here in Italy 1 month ago it was a week of heavy rain. There were also floods. I admit that now in Italy there are rains that are starting to cause fear, I don't remember these types of rains as a child

Yeah same here. I don't remember such rains creating problems when I was a child. Only now this is a problem.

Even these days in Italy there are episodes of rivers flooding. I think that something will have to be done in terms of infrastructure to contain the water and have as little damage as possible in the future

Stay Safe...This is mainly because of the Cyclone effect and not only Chennai, in any big city of India if it rains so much there will be a problem.

This is an ordinary rain that we usually get. The actual fearful rain happens in the month of November and December. But people fear for this small rain itself. All because of encroachment and bad rain water drains.

Chennai está lleno de mal augurio

I gravely sorry for the flooding problems you encounter in your area. I hope it gets solved soon though that will remain a mere wish unless bad governance is evacuated. I know what it's like to have to deal with floods in your apartment. If the problem is far from being fixed maybe you should consider relocation to a safer part of the country where your life and properties don't have to be in constant danger because of floods? I hope you survive either way. Thanks for writing and have a great day.

Flood is one of the world problems that needs to be addressed
It’s addressed but I don’t think it has a full concentration
That’s what I feel

Rain should be a thing of job but unfortunately, the flood makes people scared
This isn’t something that individuals can do so I hope the government tries their best to intervene in the matter

Honestly I feel very bad after hearing this, I still remember my childhood days when our house used to be filled with water during raining season, I used to play in the water coming from the ground as a child, but our furnitures got bad quickly. Honestly this was the order of the day, until we destroyed the old structure and built a new one filling it high up (which I think you should consider saving towards to), now I'm much older that's when a non governmental organization did the road reducing the chances of such occurrence, but still didn't eliminate it for some of my neighbors.

Nevertheless I wish you the best in your stay in chennai, I would have loved for you to move temporarily like you stated others do, if the means is available.
