One of my biggest pieces of HIVE advice

A long long time ago before the advent of proper communities on Hive, there were these defacto communities that popped up here and there and were tied together via Discord chats. It was in those groups that I learned one of the lessons about Hive that I still put into practice today.

The communities back then weren't too dissimilar from the ones that are in place today. Like I said, they were more loosely formed, but they usually had a larger curation account, it was a group of like minded people, and they supported each other towards a unified goal or content.

In many cases the requirements for some of these communities were much stricter than what we see today. Some of them required you to apply and meet a certain criteria to be accepted. It wasn't as easy as clicking a "join" button like you see today.

Indeed, Hive was a much different place back then, but some of the skills and lessons from the "old days" are important to carry forward into today.

This key tip I have for you today comes from a group called the SteemEngine. Not to be confused with Hive-Engine or Steem-Engine. This group was in place long before those second layer token solutions ever existed. One of the moderators was a quite particular woman who had very specific ways she wanted content presented. She made a point of hammering that home every time you stepped a little bit outside of the lines.

I can't recall her name now and I don't even know as though she is still around on the platform, but I think people like @tattoodjay and @bigtom13 probably know who I am talking about.

That isn't to say she was a horrible person, she was actually quite lovely, she just had high expectations for the content on this chain. Content that was often tied to her community and thus a representation of what that community stood for.

The tip I am finally going to share with you here is probably the thing that she "nicked" me on the most. If we were getting graded, it wouldn't have been uncommon for me to get an "F" in this subject.

It was so backwards from all of the assumptions I had at the time that it was a hard habit to break.

I can still picture her comments to me in Discord on pretty much a daily basis:

You need to resize your images!

It seems so simple doesn't it? Yet I struggled with it time and again.

My thinking was, I have this beautiful image of a crystal clear lake that I took while I was on vacation. Why wouldn't I want that to come through as crisp and high resolution as possible. It is doing a disservice to the image to cut down the quality. I'd even argue it is a disservice to the reader not being able to see it in all its glory.

Like I said, it took a while for her point to finally sink in with me.

Even back then many people across the world were using Hive on mobile devices. Mobile devices in areas that didn't always have the best wireless or Internet service. The higher resolution image that I put in my post, the longer it is going to take that post to load for them.

Sure, they might wait it out so they can see what I have to say, but on the other hand, they might get frustrated and move on to a post that takes less time to load. Like I said, it took a long time for me wrap my head around this. I don't honestly know why because it makes so much sense now.

It worked though, and to this day, I still resize pretty much all of my photos before I post them into Hive. You would be surprised how much cutting a photo from 4 MB to 400k makes a difference in load time and doesn't really cut down the quality as much as you would think.

I use a free program called Irfanview. I have been using it for decades now and it is super powerful and just as functional as it was the first day I installed it. It even has batch operations so if I want to mass resize a bunch of photos from my last vacation I can do that quite easily. I have found that using a 40% ratio for downsizing your photos is a good sweet spot. It doesn't distort them too much, but it still keeps the size small enough to allow them to load well. It seems like that 200k to 600k range is a great place to be in terms of file size.

You might be thinking, I read through all of that and this is the piece of advice? I get it, it seems to simple to carry so much weight, but that's it. You would be shocked how much of a difference it can make. I can only guess at the number of people who have decided to stick around to read my blog because the images loaded so quickly.

There probably isn't even a way to quantify it, but the if you think about it, I think you will realize it makes a lot of sense. It was one of the first things that I shared with @iikrypticsii when I got him started on Hive. He has been busy lately with college coursework, but you better believe when he writes a post he resizes his images before he posts them.

Because this is such an awesome post, here is a BBH Tip for you. . Keep up the fantastic work

Thank you!

I reallly want to thank you for this! I used to pay close attention to this little detail WAY back in the dial-up days, but have completely fogotten about it in the era of broadband.

A very easy thing to do when you are sitting on high speed Internet like I am. I don't blame you at all. Its good to remember that without out readers we wouldn't be here, so making things easier for them is a must!

Luckily, I use WP as my front end and it does a great job of resizing the images. Great point though.

That is good! I am glad to hear you have something in place!

Great tip Bozz. I have so many issues with image uploads with apples file format. I need to crop or edit a photo to actually get it to load...

Ugh that sounds horrible. It's too bad because there are so many things that apple does so well.

HEIC is very “efficient” at compressing images. It compresses images at 40-50% compared to similar images shot in the JPEG format so at least that is good.

I don't usually resize but since writing a photography article with 20+ images I've begun shrinking images to ~500kb and linking to the full image underneath.

There are a lot of hive users in locations where I would imagine unlimited data is not a given. It only takes a few minutes to make life easier for them.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

For sure! Where do you keep the full sized version of the images to that people can access them? That is a good idea.

Ahhhhhh, SteemEngine. It is still the standard I hold every other community to. It was just a magical place during it's run. @ethandsmith and @enchantedspirit were the architects with a stunning supporting cast like @awakentolife and @petra182. I see awakentolife now and again but the others are almost entirely gone.

A tragically sad note for you. @catweasel (Mr Enchanted Spirit) died very suddenly a short while ago.

I still have the discord server in my pile and even check in there every now and again. If for no other reason than to look at the logo :)

The STEEM Engine

Yeah. I still have a copy of it in markdown. I don't throw anything away...

I don't blame you for keeping it! Plus it is on the blockchain so it is forever right?! It was a pretty cool place. I learned a lot there and really grew my legs. I wouldn't really trade it.

That is terrible news, I remember him well.. he put me on trial to get into The SteemEngine!.., his humour was great.

Yeah, me too. All of it...

True indeed, the image size makes a diiference. Particularly when there are a lot of them. I use tinyPNG to compress my image. Usually in image intesive posts.

That sounds like a really great tool! Thanks for sharing! I will have to keep that in my back pocket!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Simple but the effect is huge. I used to be among the Utopian moderator and I can never forget some lessons I got from the community. I have been building many things around them. No advice is small.

That is awesome. That was a great community back in the day. I remember it well!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yup, I have been compressing my images the last few years for the reason you mention. It also conserves storage space on the image servers so that is another good benefit.

I use jpegoptim at 70% and it seems to work fine.

Thanks for the recommendation. I will check that out. Yes, the space savings are also a really good benefit!

Electronic-terrorism, voice to skull and neuro monitoring on Hive and Steem. You can ignore this, but your going to wish you didnt soon. This is happening whether you believe it or not. https://ecency.com/fyrstikken/@fairandbalanced/i-am-the-only-motherfucker-on-the-internet-pointing-to-a-direct-source-for-voice-to-skull-electronic-terrorism

That's great advice. It's something a lot of people probably don't even think about when they're writing an article. I know I don't. With the increased power of the internet and technology in general, it probably doesn't have quite the same impact as it used to, but it's still golden advice. In today's world of instant gratification, cutting the download time could make a serious difference. Good write!

Thanks, I appreciate that. Yeah, I agree things are getting faster, but I know there are still a lot of gaps out there. I have never really traveled outside the US, but given how many dead or low quality areas we have here, I am guessing there are countless others across the globe.

That is good advise and funnily enough I got critiqued by someone recently for the opposite that I should be sharing higher resolution images but that was just one of the excuses he came up to justify criticizing my posts getting higher rewards than he felt they deserved but I digress
I am terrible with names but I see @bigtom has a far better memory for names than I do

So sad to hear catweasal passed away

I do remember that group fondly

Oh wow, that is horrible. I guess people have an excuse for just about everything these days...

It didn’t bother me I laughed and kept doing what I do

I don't re-size my images anymore, but can remember @enchantedspirit giving me hassle about it.

Yep, that was it!

I never really considered the image size but it does make sense. Maybe I will go through and see what the size of my images are later to see if there is anything I need to change.

If no one has complained you might be okay, but you never know I guess. Could be a good idea to go and check.

Oh, yeah, this is quite a great tip, because I know I have left some posts and moved on to the next because it was taking too long to load. Sometimes I left it to load while I did something else but never remembered to get back to that tab. Thesr things have happened, that's why it's easy to realize this is a great tip! Thanks @bozz.

It seems so little but trying to load a 2MB image file on a phone can be a little while. Resizing and also optimizing the file helps JPG would be the best for web quality and I often run mine through a site called tinyjpg.com Often takes a 100kb image and brings it down to 70kb or better and makes site load times lighting fast. This is also VERY important when it comes to SEO for articles. All of these little adjustments overall help the quality of an article to get ranked.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Very interesting to know that about the SEO! Thank you! Thanks for the tip on the program too.

Greetings friend, it is good that you carry this advice that comes from a school from steem, from what I see it was a good teaching and a great group of curators dedicated to the growth of Hive, sometimes I wonder why they withdraw from Hive? But hey, everything is a cycle of experiences and learning, thanks for this with

Haha.. Yeah! I tried several times to explain this to folks. This is perfect. It makes a difference in loading and the overall flow within the chain. It's careless to take up blockchain space with high data files. Sort of a waste of resources really. I can see how NFT's need to be a nice high quality, but photos of my pup need not be so big.

Good advice and the way you explained her reminded me of Jaynie from the former steemitbloggers. It was tough getting accepted and then there were plenty of rules like meaningful commenting and post quality.. I learned A BUNCH during those days. Things have changed a bit haven't they.

I just edit my files in paint, one at a time, but your program sounds nicer. and quicker. For my iPhone, I downloaded PhotoCompress .. A free and rather fast mass compression app. You can either keep or discard the originals when using it.

That is awesome. I need to find something I can use on my Android. Especially once Project Blank gets released and I am doing more short form content from my phone. Ah yes, I remember that group I think. I think I was eventually kicked because I wasn't as active and I didn't want to follow all of the rules. It was one of those groups. They got a bit out of hand and my attention was split in various directions. Thanks for the great comment. Speaking of high quality NFTs, good luck with your sales!

Yup.. You got it right. Yeah look into that app. It works great. Project Blank? Not sure I know anything about that one.

Thanks. I sold one recently for a ton of HIVE so I think I am done.. Retiring. 😆

It is going to be like Twitter but built here on Hive as part of Leo Finance. I won't be dedicated to just finance stuff though. You will be able to microblog like Twitter but on project blank you will earn a new token. Enjoy that retirement! :)

Oh Cool.. Gotcha. Thanks for the heads up. Can't wait to see it.
