Greetings, crypto grinders!
The new week has just started and I hope you are feeling relaxed. In today's article, I am focusing on airdrops and, more specifically, the Grass airdrop that is bound to happen in just 5 hours.
For the past year, I have been farming a lot of airdrops starting from staking $TIA which led me to receive the pretty good $DYM airdrop. From there on I've experienced some decent ones while most have been more or less disappointing and at the beginning of the year, I would have never thought that the Dymension airdrop would remain the highlight of 2024.
In this crypto space, there is one certain thing we can all count on and that is the absolute rage of users after airdrop checkers go live. During these times the Discord channels and X accounts of projects go wild as users disappointed in their allocation express their feelings.
On many occasions, I can truly relate to raging farmers as there have been airdrops where the project has actually been farming people, not the other way around. It must be very tempting for projects to first promise the moon and the stars and then deliver dust while at the same time, they have harnessed a massive, free marketing machine to their disposal. This applies mostly to Telegram tap-to-earn games which have been letting users down since last summer.
Will There Be Drama
Then there are the linear airdrops.
With these, your allocation is based on the amount you had farmed the airdrop and compared to tier-based ones, the small fish are likely to receive dust as Justin Suns enter the farm during the last week with their millions.
Then again, by looking at airdrops from the project owner's point of view, they do want to cater the whales as these large mammals with their millions are the ones they like to see using their platform after the TGE is done and the initial hype has faded.
One thing is for sure, it ain't easy being on either side.
If you have grabbed your popcorn and expecting fireworks on Grass Discord after the launch I may have to disappoint you. The biggest rage already went on when the airdrop allocation was revealed so now we know exactly how much we are getting. On the other hand, there may always be some issues with claiming, and foremost the price at launch might, or probably most certainly will disappoint some users.
What Is Grass?
Before we dig deeper into the price speculations, here's a short description of Grass for those unfamiliar with the protocol:
Grass Protocol is a decentralized network focused on gathering and structuring public data from the internet for AI model training. Built on the Solana blockchain, it leverages Layer 2 Data Rollup architecture, which enables efficient, high-speed data processing for AI training needs.
Grass operates by connecting a vast network of nodes that are basically us sharing our unused internet which Grass then uses for their purposes. Farming the Grass airdrop has actually been one of the most passive ones I've come across as the nodes are running in the background and the points are automatically added to our accounts. Now these points are about to turn into $GRASS tokens at the token genesis event in just 4 hours.
Fingers crossed. 🤞
GRASS Price Prediction
The airdrop was divided into 8 or 9 epochs which each lasted about a month. The early birds were rewarded most generously so if you have been running your node since epoch 1, you are probably allocated a nice amount of $GRASS. I'm getting 80 $GRASS tokens which could be pretty ok depending on the price.
With many airdrops, I have been using pre-markets to give me some kind of a hint about the price at TGE. Whales Market is one of these and currently $GRASS is trading there at the price of $0.7. The price has come down a bit within a week as I remember it trading on both sides of one dollar/token not so long ago.
People are aware of the Grass tokenomics and the Grass price is formed here based on those and on the projects launched before with similar tokenomics. The Whales Market prices have been pretty solid indicators before and the actual price hasn't deviated much at launch. Still, we are obviously hoping for an opening way above $1.
At this point, I'm going to take a lunch break and return to writing and report to you if there is much drama after TGE.
Will there be drama? Will there be rage?
The Claim
And the answer to both questions is, yes, of course.
After my lunch, I was patiently waiting for that timer seen above to go to zero and once it did, I happily clicked the claim -button. The only problem was that so many other people across the world were probably doing the same thing at the exact same time and the network got congested.
This is perhaps affecting the whole Solana network now since there's this general notification on Phantom. So basically Grass broke Solana.
Trading is now ongoing at centralized exchanges and the Whales Market pre-price wasn't that far off as $GRASS is now trading at $0.9481.
However, many people have not yet been able to claim, myself included. As expected, token genesis events with airdrops tend to create some drama, and the Grass Discord server sure did not disappoint.
As you can see in the picture above, airdrops always bring out the best in people. That being said, I can understand the frustration when you look at the dropping price of the token and are still stuck with the claim process.
Also, these can always be done better. For example, not long ago I took part in DeBridge airdrop and they had all sorts of claiming options way before TGE. I chose the option to receive my tokens in Gate.io account and there my $DBR tokens were waiting well before the launch. Ten points to DeBridge.
As for Grass, it turned out that the problem with claiming was somehow related to Phantom and I was able to claim my $GRASS using Magic Eden Wallet. Remember, in cases like this, you can always export your seed phrase/private key to another wallet and try with that. With airdrops, there are always some issues at some end and the best we can do is prepare for them and play it cool. There's no hurry.
The drama concerning $GRASS claiming is cooling off a bit now on Discord and I believe the upcoming complaints will be about $GRASS price if it's low or not being eligible if the price is high.
I thank you for reading and wish you a great new week! I will now start thinking about what to do with "all" that $GRASS but that's another story...
