Negotiation - The Art.

In the way of business, Negotiation is a must have. A skill that never dies. Even in the life of an individual, negotiation is good to have. I have come across people with killer negotiation skills, in the workplace, online, in the market and I do not think it can be overemphasised enough.

Soft skills come in handy in the field of careers. No matter what you do, you are tested with how far your skills go as far as negotiation is concerned. You may need to ask for a raise, or negotiate terms and benefits, or a clause that you do not agree with on a contract. We can not say though, that negotiation stops with work life.

I like to believe that negotiations happen even outside of the workplace. We engage in it daily with people, and family is included as well. I mean, there are kids who drive a mean bargain against their parents, negotiating their way out of trouble…haha. That is always a fun watch.

I have seen couples negotiate through their differences. They lay the cards on the table, strike out the critical ones and then flip what can be flipped. They are able to work through the murky waters of their differences because they understand that communication is what they need. Communication and the right form of bargain.

See, negotiation is not just professional. It is not reserved for the work times and suit ups, it is also deployed whenever we need it. Negotiating is also a form of communication where two or more people express their feelings or thoughts towards something. It is called negotiating because either way, both parties will have a win.

If we look at it in a general context, we negotiate to get the best out of the situation. At least, the best we can. It would not make sense to just take it because life or someone says to. We will want to turn things around as much as we can. I, for one, have learned to negotiate. I have also learned to apply it in my relationships. This skill is underrated and until you begin to put it in practice, you will not be able to see how much of an impact this has.

Now, how to negotiate. Negotiating is not done by force or coercion. Negotiating to get what you want does not mean you have to get aggressive or defensive. I have seen things like that happen and break relationships from business to family.

What we can do is politely lay down how we feel and what we think is best. Then we take the turn to listen to the other party so an agreement can be reached. Also learn when to take a step back, we do not push. Pushing could have the wrong effect. So, negotiating is not just about putting on business suits, it is mostly communicating what we want and verbally going for it.
