Quick report on options expiries in my managed portfolios shows a mixed bag coming from credit spreads trading in-the-money on stocks I am happy to buy.
Portfolio News
In a week where S&P 500 dropped 3% to enter bear territory, my managed portfolio rose 0.12%. The pluses came from solar power (JinkoSolar - JKS) and lithium (Global X LIT) overweighing some ugly minuses in McCormick (MKC), AirBNB (ABNB) and Disney (DIS). 16% fall in CostCo got the crown for largest percentage drop.
Update for my managed portfolios expiries
Bought
ABN AMRO Bank N.V. (ABN.AS): Dutch Bank. Assigned on credit spread sold put left after buying back bought put during the week. Assigned at 16% premium to €10.295 closing price. Cumulative put premiums bring breakeven down to €11.21
Baker Hughes Company (BKR): Oil Services. Assigned on credit spread sold put left after buying back bought put during the week. Assigned at 1.3% premium to $34.55 closing price. Breakeven after this spread is $34.45 = in profit. My stock idea on the back of rising oil price.
Quick comparison chart shows BKR (bars) compared with Oil Services ETF (OIH - purple line) and oil major Chevron (CVX - blue line). Trade breakeven is the blue ray. Oil services tends to lead the oil producers and BKR is lagging its sector - scope for closing the 30 percentage point gap.
Cboe Global Markets, Inc (CBOE): Financial Markets. Assigned on credit spread sold put. Assigned at 2.9% premium to $106.94 closing price. This was a partial assignment as the broker decided to close out one of the contracts because of margin tightness. That wiped out the advantage of the credit spread and increased breakeven to $111.31. My mistake was not selling the bought put before expiry. AAPLus idea to add stock - hence happy to hold
ChargePoint Holdings, Inc (CHPT): Electric Vehicles. Assigned on credit spread sold put. Assigned at 13% premium to $11.02 closing price. Breakeven is $12.14 = losing. AAPLus idea to add stock - hence happy to hold
Nokia Corporation (NOK): Network Equipment. Assigned on naked put. Assigned at 3.5% premium to $4.83 closing price. Breakeven is $4.80 based on this naked put only - Canadian ban on Huawei/ZTE building the 5G network will help. My stock pick.
Sold
Commerzbank AG (CBK.DE): German Bank. Assigned on covered call for 10% loss since March 2022. Income trades on Commerzbank have worked well - the longer duration trades have not.
First Trust NASDAQ Cybersecurity ETF (CIBR): Cybersecurity. TTB credit spread applied to a tranche I was already holding makes for 5.1% blended loss since April/May 2022 but does reduce cost base.
Hedging Trades and Shorts
Hedging trades on VGK lost and shorts on TLT win. No trades closed on QQQ - they roll into June.
Income Trades
Overall 40 covered calls written across two portfolios with one assignment (Europe 7 UK 2 US 31) and only 4 naked puts (Europe 1 US 3) with one assignment also.
7 credit spreads expired with 2 going TTB (CIBR and URI) and 3 going to exercise (BKR, CHPT, CBOE) and two staying out-the-money (GOOGL, CA.PA). Net income was positive after the TTB cases were accounted for.
United Rentals, Inc (URI): Equipment Rental. The ideal set up for a credit bull put spread is to place the short put below support with the bought put offering protection lower down. Quick look at the chart shows this is what was done here with the lower red line showing several touches going back over a year.
Too bad the market mood had other ideas.
