Reverse Engineering Products

Today I picked up a couple of swivel cushions as I have a few ideas to make this product better. I am always on the look out for a few lines to add to the business and this is an ideal candidate. Like I always say if you keep your eyes open there is opportunity all around us and you need to pay attention. I could just find the manufacture and just import them myself, but that is too easy and why give the profit away when you can do it yourself. I will make some obvious changes so the copyright is not in question and this will not even be close to the same item.

Firstly I will need to reverse engineer the product and see how this item is put together. I have a few ideas, but cannot make changes until I have this in what seems to be 3 or 4 different parts. I don't want to necessarily copy what they have here, but make some obvious changes taking it up another level on usability and quality.

We have nothing like this in South Africa and I know this item would sell if it was available. I think the getting in and out of a car is something the older generation struggles with and this they would buy. Lifting and swinging your legs out is back friendly ad does not mean you have to twist your trunk which is how people damage their backs. If you have a bad back already then this product is ideal.

I already have the data base of every chiropractor in SA from when I did my bed project around 10 years ago. That project was a dead end as I was blocked as the person in charge was on the take from a bed manufacturer. This was a bit crazy to think the bed I had developed was for back patients and each bed was custom made for whatever the patient required yet cheaper than the local bed manufacturers. Chiropractors were excited about the project and were upset when their head person in charge said no. Chiropractors are or were not allowed to sell products for profit which I thought was short changing their patients.

Thankfully with the introduction of online shopping those times have now changed and anyone can have access to buying my latest swivel cushion offering. I would guess the market would be anywhere between 1000 and 2000 cushions per month which would be a really profitable line. Most people would not think twice about this, but I do see dollar signs and this will sock people knowing how much can be made. Doing these sorts of projects I find fun and I am confident in my abilities so I will keep you all informed to show how easy this really is. These cost me 30 GBP each which I thought was expensive and what excited me as I know they are costing under 10 GBP each to manufacture.

When I return to SA in 10 days time I would realistically expect to have this product ready for around April/May. The trick is can I make this all myself or do I have to outsource some items? This I will only know once I have taken this apart and worked out how to make it stronger and better.

I have seamstresses already doing the trampoline mats so it makes sense to use their expertise and keep them busy. This may require a small investment buying one or two more sewing machines that have specific tasks so we shall see how this ends up. Manufacturing is where the money is made these days and imported items would cot far ore once shipping and duties have been added on. China is not cheap and has not been cheap for many years.

This proves that you are thinking out of the box and try to complement your business with new niches which can offer unexploited demand. Good luck with it!

Yes this is the fun part as it does not cost much to experiment. I see $5K monthly for this item.

I don't know how you juggle all the things you are involved in!

The idea of this type cushion is a great one that I was not aware of.

I started getting in and out of the car like this years ago when I had an ankle injury and it was not a good idea to get in and out of the car in the normal way if I wanted to keep as much stress as possible off of it. I sit down, then twirl my feet and legs in under the steering wheel and reverse when getting out. Even after my ankle healed, I have kept doing it this way as one of my knees sometimes fusses too. Getting in and out this way has served me well.

Interesting so the US has nothing like this available or you have not seen one. I will send you one once I start production.

I didn't mean to imply they don't exist here, maybe they do and maybe they have for a long time, but I was just not aware such a thing existed. It's a very clever idea either way. When you develop things like this, do you normally just sell commercially?

No it was good to hear you have not seen this before, was what I was trying to say. Yes I will upgrade this to my standards and then commercially sell them. Some work needs to happen as to have the best solution available is what I want and need to create. The market is there for this as I can think of at least 50 people off the top of my head who would buy one tomorrow.
