I think most of the World has been following the US elections and how bizarre the whole circus has become. The so called leader of the free world has different rules for different states and is not the same for every citizen.
These days with social media we ae able to learn and see far more than what we would have normally. I had no idea up until recently that using some sort of identification whilst voting was not necessary across all the States in America. I just find this mind boggling and really bizarre. Proving who you are should be the first part of the voting process which entitles you to one vote and one vote only. Maybe I just have a general lack of trust in humans in general, but why allow a system with floors to operate.
Common sense tells you this is open to voter fraud on so many levels. This and the last election has shown how backward the US voting system actually is and how open the entire process is to manipulation. Why is it only now e are hearing about this type of problem and cannot recall this being a problem back in previous elections? Maybe it was an issue, but we never knew about this.
When you check in for a flight you have to show identity even if it is for an internal flight so surely the privilege of being a citizen of your country you should protect that privilege by proving who you are. People have fought and died for the privileges of being able to vote in what is meant to be a free and fair election process.
Politics is dirty and we have seen the worst of this coming from the States in the last 10 years and I really hope they can clean up their act and start putting their people first. @bozz mentioned the other day hopefully we will see a third party rise because a two party system is clearly not the answer when you have two bad actors only. The same applies to the UK as it is very clear the citizens of that country are not important anymore.
I have only known one way in South Africa and that is you have to show your identification before being eligible to vote. Yes we have fraud happening here as well due many non citizens having stolen identities, but the fact still remains without an identity document you do not vote. In the UK you have to show photo identification as well so not having to is a red flag and a very big red flag.
I remember when I lived in the UK there was discussion over having an identification card with many rejecting this idea. In South Africa we have ID cards which includes a record of your finger prints. I can understand a portion of the public being anti this especially if you commit crime because the chances of being caught are far higher if your finger print records are on the system. I have had no problem with this because I have had no need to worry.
Being a citizen of a country is a privilege and with this comes the rights of being able to vote. The idea that a certain party is happy to allow anyone to become a citizen of their country is ludicrous. Politics has changed for the worse over the last 30 years mainly down to lack of trust and agendas being played out which do not include you.
221/198 in favor of not allowing the illegal migrants to vote is actually far closer than it should have been and you would expect 100% against this unless there is a benefit to one party screwing over every rightful citizen of that country.
South Africa has open borders which in itself has screwed its citizens and why most of them are now unemployed living on a grant of $20 per month. Can you imagine the uprising if the illegals were allowed to vote because we would see mass xenophobia killings overnight. This is how you divide a country and why the government only managed to hang on in the last elections having to team up with other parties to form a coalition government. Next time around I doubt they will be in the same position and they will be gone or on their way out.
