Should you keep your Hive account anonymous?

An important question to ask yourself early 🧐

This isn't the first time I have asked myself this question. Revealing everything about yourself on Hive comes with risk and responsibility. Right now it may not seem like much since there are only around 20k active users on Hive. However, things might look vastly different once there are millions of active accounts and every single person has the ability to look at your wallet and see how much money you have.

This decision comes down to a battle between privacy and transparency. Blockchains are well known for making data visible to everyone involved and not just centralized powers. There are however privacy blockchains such as Monero that allow users to move their funds without having to worry about who is watching their activity.

Then there is Hive, a place where you can be totally open to everything, or a place where you lurk in the shadows. There are many anonymous accounts on Hive, some are even whales and hold massive amounts of Hive Power. These individuals are obviously not okay with everyone knowing full details about their financial prowess.

We all have reasons for whether or not we choose to be anonymous on Hive. I do want to say that I think you can still be a valid community member and even a community leader without revealing your identity. Decentralized Web 3 is supposed to be trustless, so seeing someone's face and knowing where they live shouldn't change anything. Just look at the recent news about Three Arrows Capital and how the founders (who doxxed themselves) have run off with billions of dollars of customer funds. That right there should tell you that just because someone isn't anonymous, does NOT mean they are someone that you can trust or find.

In today's video, I wanted to take the time to discuss this topic in depth. There are many different things to consider when it comes to whether or not you are anonymous on Hive. There is no one way to do this and I advise that you make your own decision about this type of thing and stay aware of how our environment evolves over the next several years.

Below I will link my older blog that I mentioned in the video where I give you even more written information about anonymity on Hive.

I'm still skeptical in showing all my daily activities in life attaching photos.. coz I value privacy, although I don't have a lot in my wallet.. I am just torn between being a reserve user or reveal a lot just so I can be notice, I'm still undecided 🤦

For users who have a lot in their wallet, it is understandable that they're anonymous.. because who knows bad guys will just come and knock on their doors asking for their private keys if they reveal themselves especially where they live.

If you are not comfortable with it, then don't do it. I am more than happy to share my life with the world. I don't ever want to be obsessed with sharing every single thing that I do on a daily basis. However, I also don't want to feel fear over the idea of talking about my life. The choice is totally up to you.

Hmm, your insights gives me the courage to open up.. although I open up most of my blogs on other platforms but I don't show much of myself..thank you, you enlighten me :)

It is an interesting topic and brings a different perspective. Thanks for the information.

Thanks for watching!

Thanks for sharing.

Where can i get the info about Hive having 20K active users?

Need to glue my eyes on that number! :)

!PIZZA

Yeah it’s really surprising when you see those numbers since Hive feels so much bigger than the 20k daily active users. Same with LeoFinance, there we have a couple hundred monthly active users. I mean that is tiny compared to what the big Web2 platforms have and is showing the huge potential out there for Hive!

The hive blockchain is very much appreciated with how it operates. I believe the idea of knowing people's accounts may not seem appropriate but might just give you the edge of who you might follow to progress in a positive way depending on how the case might be.

Personally, I love being able to look at other people's wallets. If you can learn to not let bigger wallets make you jealous, but instead motivate you... Then you are going to benefit I think.

Your right about that which I believe act as a motivation to works towards achieving such as well

The fact of the matter is, the tech exists to help you go dark if that's the path you ever want to take.

Just saying ;)

This is true, there are many unknown accounts on HIVE and throughout crypto in general. I just love how it is no longer only the banks who can view how much is in a wallet. Now we all have the ability to look inside all wallets (even if we don't know who the owner is).

Having the option to go anonymous is a really good thing. Not everyone really wants to be known or put out their life on the open. That's the beauty of Web 3.0, you can lurk in the shadows and do your own thing. Now, there are consequences with that too. Like being labeled a shady person but that's a risk I'll take than the reward of being out in the open.

Having that option is key. There are ways to bolster your reputation through consistent efforts, even when anonymous. It may not be quite as easy but certainly is not impossible.

Honestly, I am identity and privacy conscious. But what I have noticed in most cases is that people who show themselves are the one who get noticed by the community.

That pushed me to reveal myself...which is until now, I am asking myself if I am right to do it.

I still know of a few very popular community members who have yet to reveal who they are. I think it takes a lot to get to that level, but it is possible. Being a great developer helps a lot and just proving yourself over and over makes it hard to ignore that person. I think having anonymous witnesses for instance can be a good/bad thing. It is great for nobody to know who to go after if they wish to try another hostile takeover. However, it could be a concern that if a potential witness did something bad, we'd never know who it was.

Tough to say what is the best choice for each individual person.

Revealing themselves can earn more the trust of the community, otherwise they will lose their image and it could be a turmoil.

The great guide always, very upset only 20k active users are active in hive. 🙁

We could easily 10x that number by promoting Hive worldwide when the next bullrun starts. 💪🏻
Maybe the movie Bering done these days about the special Hive history could be a booster too.

❣️

There will be more eventually 😉

I’m with you on this one. I don’t want to reveal all the details of my life and family, nor the pictures. I’ve tried to keep that consistent which is good! With the way things go here on hive I enjoy that I don’t have to give all that info to have a good presence here. KYC is a load of shit in many regards, in the 3AC example for sure.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Damn, I hate KYC so much and am very happy that isn't a thing here. Luckily I have a very small family and circle of friends, so I really don't have many people that will ever be checking my wallet to see how much I have. It really is just people here on Hive that will see. Now that is not too many, down the road it could likely be a lot more people looking at my finances.

Yeah check out what I mentioned to Joe, it’s a bit of a pain but if you can manage it, it’s not that bad once the power down is complete. You take a short hit on rewards for a little bit but it’s safe in the long run!

Excellent idea and I’ve considered it before, just haven’t felt the need to do it quite yet. It is a smart security measure though.

I prefer not to be anonymous because it is not necessary. Like you said, seeing someone's face and knowing where they live doesn't make them trustworthy and vice versa. I understand why people are anonymous and I don't judge them for it.

I guess this may matter more to someone with millions of dollars in their account. Bad people may see those users as an easy target. Imagine all somebody evil has to do is get your keys and then they get full access to your account and can take every token without anybody being able to stop them. This will be unlikely for most, but there are always going to be scammers. It would be a lot more difficult to find someone who is anonymous than it would be to find somebody who shows their face and says where they live. After that, all it would take is some torture and most would give up their passwords.

This is all hypothetical of course and probably wouldn't happen until far into the future. I have watched way too many movies and get wild ideas like this in my head. May never be a problem, but I can't help but consider the possibility.

What you are thinking is not crazy and it is normal. I'm sure it happens in real life too. That's why it might even be better if people with the rich accounts you mentioned keep themselves private. Nobody wants to face torture etc.

It was a trippy shock when I first joined steemit before and could see all the numbers of anybody's account.. so different from everything else in life.

I made it through several years of steemit without ever getting hacked, but then I started doing hive and immediately got tricked into putting my key.. i was just trying to upvote an intro post, but because I got to it via an outside site, it was a stupid capture page. anyway, since then I been very careful and definitely see why being anonymous is a good thing. I still feel that the benefit of sharing (like your pics or a vid, etc) are worth it too..

your beard looks different in this vid. did u do something or maybe the sun lightened certain parts?

Oh no, I had no idea that happened to you. I'm sure you are much more careful now. There are so many scam artists out there.

Nothing new with my beard, just been out in the sun a lot so maybe that has changed the color. I am headed back to the barber next week though. Gotta get right for my beach trip.

This is an interesting topic you've touched on Daltono, I've been trying to onboard family members lately though its been tough because of distance they need me to hold their hands to setting up an account. On the other side am worried what if these folks gets on Hive, view my wallet and get ideas of me being rich and yet not giving them money. It has been thoughts running through me.

I like the idea of having to create anonymous account to move funds there, I think that will work well with HBD savings.
Currently though I just enjoy being free and known by the community, I like it when I get to address a Hiver by name instead of username, it just creates a feel of real friendship like the physical world lol.

What you can do is have a custodial account that you store funds on. You have everything for posts and all that on this account here but have your funds and hive power on another account and delegate to this one. It’s a good idea and one that I may end up doing in the future. One of the other benefits on that approach is that the keys are always offline. I don’t know about you but in the early days I was loosey-goosey with my keys and used one that is not a good idea to do things with until a few months in lol. I don’t think it’s compromised but you never know.

Powering down and moving all the funds over to another account is time consuming but it could be the safest bet. Then in the situation of family you can say you’re poor and have a good orca helping you out or something hahaha

These are good ideas worth putting to practice to remain low key from those inquisitive eyeballs getting ideas 💡.

No doubt I will have that custodial account in the near future.

Hand holding can be difficult. For instance, it shouldn't be our responsibility to keep track of the keys for these new users. When they sign up they need to get used to it being on them from the start.

Those who continue to sleep on crypto and realize years down the road just how well-off people who got in early become... They surely will be anxious to find a way to get in on those rewards that they were not here for. So I imagine it is scary knowing that friends/family/enemies can all see how much is in your wallet.

Having multiple accounts is the answer. Many of us wish to be public about many things, but there are certain things that should perhaps stay private. Better to think about this now rather than once it's too late.

That's the main reason I held off helping them to create accounts, it is better they learn how to keep their keys safe from the onset.

Thanks for this post Daltono, this has got me thinking of privacy already.

This is a complicated and difficult issue to analyze from my point of view, since I do not believe that everything should be anonymous and there must be some representative face, but we must be careful since many might want to see our capital and try to harm us through of so-called scams

I think the best thing is to give people a choice whether or not they wish to be anonymous. As long as things stay this way and we aren't forced to verify our identification, then I think we are doing this whole Web 3 thing right.
