Which wallet to use?
More secure wallets for Bitcoin?
These are questions that I very frequently read on social networks and in all conversations about Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies.
Although many people make the mistake of not asking these questions when entering the world of cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin, they start using different wallets thinking that they are all the same and that they can keep your money safe.
I will tell you my experience with this issue. Being an IT worker, which has helped me to understand this world of the "New Finance" where the new paradigm is that each person is responsible for their money, I have understood one thing:
Any open source system is a plus in terms of security and reliability.
For this reason I want to show you this website that specializes in testing the security of Bitcoin Wallets.
https://walletscrutiny.com/
Wallet Scrutiny is dedicated to testing the security of wallets by examining the application code for possible backdoors and any vulnerabilities.
On this website you will find most of the wallets classified by categories, this classification is determined by:
- Audited
- Reproducible
- Unreproducible
- Build Error
- No Source
- Custodial
- No Send / No Receive
At the time of writing this post there are 704 categorized wallets, from 1 to 7 they are what we could say are the safest for being "Open source" software, this allows the team that integrates "Wallet Scrutiny" to download the source code, compile it and compare it to know if the binary produced is the same as the one downloaded from the different App Stores.
Wallet Scrutiny also includes "Hardware Wallets" and can be filtered by operating system.
By clicking on any of the icons of the reviewed wallets you will be able to see the analysis of the tests and the final verdict of the result, wallet data such as the number of evaluations in the App Stores, number of downloads, the year in which it was launched and the older reviews.
Conclusions and recommendations
If you are one of those who like to be strict with security, Wallet Scrutiny is a tool that will keep you updated on how different wallets improve or not their security.
This website tell you "Do your own research", for example, in my case I use Wallets only Bitcoin to accumulate satoshis, I would never store bitcoin in a multi-chain.
Guiding me by Wallet Scrutiny, I would only use the "Reproducible" ones, obviously they are one step away from being completely Auditable.
