Week on Hive

17 of 26 tracked posts made it to this week's issue of the "Week on Hive" roundup.

In the Spotlight

VSC, Hive and EVM Wallets

I did include the news about the first successful transactions from Hive to an EVM wallet and back via VSC Network when I discovered it on their X profile, three weeks ago, on that Week through Adrian's Lenses.

This time the VSC team put forth a full post on Hive about their accomplishment.

So, why would anyone care about these EVM wallets on VSC? Here's my short-version understanding of things:

For Hive and Hivers, it's a more direct decentralized way to access EVM chains (probably Ethereum only, at first), via VSC.

For EVM users, it's a way to access Hive, its coins HIVE and HBD, and eventually the apps that will be built on VSC, and signing transactions with Metamask instead of Hive Keychain. Plus, the team plans to add the functionality to allow them to post on Hive using their Metamask instead of a Hive account.

For both, but especially for the latter, it means using EVM without transaction fees other than the RC requirements on VSC. Which for Ethereum users may a be big deal.

I hope I understood things well. Also, it's one thing when you see marketing materials, another when you see things in production, with pretty interfaces and everything.

Marketing / Awareness / Branding

HiveCubaCon Went Without a Glitch

A few conferences, some HBD purchases + trying out Distriator, some networking and 30 new people on Hive, I guess that's how someone would describe HiveCubaCon in a few words. Maybe they can do a better job. Images do make more than 1000 words sometimes...

Governance / Development / Dapps / Education

Hive Core Developers Meeting

I believe it was an interesting meeting, but not because of reveals that would excite a regular user.

What I found interesting was a broader view offered by Dan at some point with where things are going, basically toward highly differentiated Hive nodes, probably only witness nodes remaining to hold all blocks of the chain. In the future we will likely see some types of nodes that will hold no historic blocks at all.

Then, a technical but important change that is happening is changing API architectural design from JSON-RPC to REST. I think they started to add the REST API to the WAX library and a few apps. The main difference between the two, is that the former is procedure-focused, while the latter is data-focused. REST architectural design, while about 2-3 decades newer than RPC, didn't replace it. I'm guessing this change has to do with Hive APIs being more data-heavy and because REST is the more modern architectural design. I had a feeling Dan was kind of expecting some good questions on this topic, because he asked a few times if there were any.

They are also working on improving documentation for WAX, which is the new library they are working on for Hive. Dan talked about the open source help-generating tool they use for that (swagger docs) with enough details.

He touched on pretty much all big topics they are working on, from various applications (Clive, Denser, Block Explorer - this might be on @Mcfarhat's plate, I believe), to lite accounts, 2nd layer transactions, and where things are on that front (quite at the beginning).

Here's the recording and the transcript of the meeting.

INLEO at New ATH Monthly Active Users... But Behind

Following the recent introduction of the referral system and short videos (via SPK Network), including as a separate feed (created especially for shorts), looks like the number of monthly active users on INLEO increased to something like 1750, but their target is 1900 for August, so they are behind. Nonetheless, this seems to be the newest ATH of mostly organic monthly active users on INLEO. They talk about this and others in their Growing INLEO discussion.

New Hive Engine NFT Explorer

@cadawg created a new tool to explore NFTs on Hive-Engine. Check it out!

PeakD - Voting with Multiple Accounts at the Same Time

If you need to vote with multiple accounts on the same piece of content, with the same weight (potential to select from a few standard weights), PeakD created a way to do it in one operation, for all selected accounts that you have in your "login as" list on PeakD.

The same update talks about stats being linked to the Witnesses and Proposal pages on PeakD that are provided on HiveHub.dev.

Ecency Is Changing Frameworks

Ecency is moving from Razzlejs to Nextjs framework. I suppose that won't mean anything for the regular user. Different technologies, thinking with the future developments in mind. Here's the announcement.

Games

Important Updates from dCity

Holders of Communal Housing, Luxury Street and Migration Center combined buildings will be able to claim one student per building every 3 or 4 days at a cost of 800 SIM per student to claim.

Discovering tech is on hold until education and discovery goes through a big overhaul. Basically, one would be able to better target discoveries in certain areas, in the future.

There is also a note in these announcements about future 4th edition cards presale to be expected.

dCrops Added Starter Packs for Sale

From my understanding, the game can continue to be played without one, but a starter pack contains everything one needs for a hassle-free start of the game.

A starter pack costs 5$ payable in HIVE, SWAP.HIVE or HBD, and the NFTs from the packs will be soulbound... Here's the full announcement, including FAQ.

Splinterlands HiveFest Title

Splinterlands will create a special in-game title for Hivefest 2024 ("The Emissary"), which would be an epic title. They will be offered to the participants to Hivefest, whether they are players or not (titles can be sold).

Holozing Updates

In a short update, @acidyo let us know that due to funding constrains, development of 3D creatures and polishing of 2D ones has been postponed. The most important focuses right now are to get the game ready for the alpha test version, to integrate with Metamask to appeal to EVM players, and to prepare the sale of Alpha Vials (without the possibility of opening them), to get some more funding.

Meetings / Events / Communities

How Much Hive?

A series of posts by @azircon show statistically:

They can be a very good starting point. If multiple unrelated stats point to the same conclusion, the likelihood of it being true is very high. Plus, gamification is always attractive.

An initiative to somewhat complete this one is a marathon to power up HIVE via CEXes. My question to this: why isn't LeoDex on that list, since it has both HIVE and HBD listed.

17th Borehole in Ghana Under Way

The 17th borehole project in Ghana funded by Hive just started. Looks like they aim to reach 20 by the end of this year.

Workshop on Distriator in Sucre

Looks like people in Sucre, Venezuela have been focusing on learning and sharing how to use Distriator to receive HBD cashback on purchases. They even made this workshop, but this kind of content is quite often in the LATAM community since Distriator became effective.

Week in the Crypto World

The SEC Is Back in Action

Did you miss Gensler? Looks like he's going after OpenSea and the NFTs sold there next. They received their Wells notice. To me, this seems more like a "farewell" letter notice from the crypto space, on the last mile of his stay at the SEC...

TON Chain Took a Few Breaks due to Congestion

I never liked the tap-to-earn movement. This is another form of KYC, for people using their own phone numbers. I understand why people chased it, sometimes without liking it or putting much trust in it either. On the principle... What if that's the one that makes people rich this cycle and I miss out?

At least one of these tap-to-earn projects went from words and easy games to what everyone has been waiting for: the airdrop. From what I read, some 6 million valid claims for the DOGS airdrop led to 2 x 6 hours-long outages of The Open Network (TON) as validators went out of concensus. With Telegram CEO arrested and later released on bail, TON didn't seem to feel much better either, at least for a while. It will be interesting how this situation unfolds.

I’ve noticed that you always love to update us about Ghana
Do you have any reason why?

It's a BIG series of projects funded by Hive. And as impact, they can be pretty powerful, but not in dollar terms, more like in goodwill and emotionally, if they are leveraged well.

I love how the Ghana borehole process is progressing over there
They are doing something amazing for the community
Nice one!

I hope the @ecency framework changes will be some good improvement to the platform

Hey man, I hope you do well with the new account!

About Ecency, this is mostly a technical upgrade which maybe in the future will pay off. Users won't see anything for the time being, if everything goes well.

I'm excited about the VSC updates, and I can't wait for it to go live and see how Hive benefits from it. For the Hive drama, I think it was solominer that started things with a poll, and the replies were polarizing and eventually whales put their thoughts out as well. I don't think I've seen such a massive shift in a while.

Yes, I believe we all are excited and waiting anxiously to see VSC opening "for business". Some great things they've done over there, at least so they look on paper.

I think it was solominer that started things with a poll

It seems you are right. I thought his poll succeeded Azircon's first post regarding HP of Splinterlands players (at least his request to dalz), but they might've been about the same time or the poll first.

I don't think I've seen such a massive shift

Haha, I think they kept it rather low. We might see higher waves in the future, as interest into where the funds are going rises from all sides.

A lot of people have asked for VSC for a while now. I just think pushing for more connectivity makes Hive interconnect with other chains, it's just good if we can do what we can do and also do what other chains can do

I agree. I've been for a long time a proponent of interconnectivity of blockchains, one way or another.
