The State Department's diplomats of the United States have been pressuring Nigerian officials privately to release Binance executive Tigram Gambaryan who has been detained since at least June 2024, according to a report by the New York Times.

The imprisonment of Gambaryan has been a "significant factor" in the strained relationship between the two countries, according to the outlet.

The US Ambassador to Nigeria and Secretary of the state have been pressing the issue with Nigerian officials.

In September 2024, Ambassador Mills met with the cabinet of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to further discuss the matter and advocate for Gambaryan's release, which the country's attorney general insists will only occur following a trial.

The US State Department is also requested by the Attorneys for Gmabaryan to label Gambaryan as "wrongfully detained" to further pressure Nigeria to release the detained executive which is not out of question, stated by the US State Department officials.

The jailed Binance executive's attorneys filed a new bail application on September 2, claiming that their client needed to be freed so that he could get medical assistance.

The prison officials of Nigeria also came under fire for their general neglect of the Binance exec Gambaryan.
