lets take the case of Gary
Gary is a young lad who has completed a course in mass media. currently he is working as an intern in a media house.
He has studied the technical and theoretical part of the course as part of the curriculum however he is supposed to be learning the practical aspects of the Job during his internship.
His days starts early and goes beyond the normal office hours but he does not crib because he hears his boss often say out aloud that media never sleeps.
Thus gary does all kinds of chores at his work place from getting his boss a coffee to running errands apart from doing the day to day tasks that are assigned to him by his immediate supervisor.
However he has one concern and that is the fear of AI. He hears that Artificial Intelligence or AI would take away many Jobs. Could this happen to him too?
If you too share the concerns of Gary then read this post.
How AI is making inroads into Media & Sports ?
Artificial Intelligence or AI is making inroads in the field of sports specially sports media and media broadcasting.
One area which has opened its gates to AI is media creation for the Wimbledon tennis tournament this year.
As per the All England Club which is the host of the the Wimbledon tennis this years video highlights would be a tad bit different.
This year AI is being incorporated in the video highlights section.
So when you watch the video highlights of the Wimbledon tennis the commentary would be provided by Artificial Intelligence.
IBM is being roped in for AI
IBM is a leading name in the field of AI solutions and its professional services are being deployed by the The All England Club for this years Wimbledon tennis tournament that starts on July the 3rd this year.
Not the first time that AI is being used at Wimbledon
It is reported that even in the previous year the All England club had used the services of AI to produce the stats as well as the player power indices.
Thus after successfully trying AI they are extending its application. Though for the first time for creating Audio commentary.
This may be the first of sorts but surly the speed at which Artificial Intelligence is making progress and inroads it is only a matter of time that it would play an important role in other aspects of the game as well.
How AI generates commentary is created ?
AI based commentary generation would be done using the AI service of watsonx by IBM
This has a dedicated vocabulary of tennis related jargon and technical terms.
The game related data is fed into a chat bot system created by IBM
Once the commentary is ready it is fed into another AI system that generates the audio part of the commentary.
The beauty and speed of the system is that all this happens really fast at almost near real time coverage of the videos of the matches.
IBM is looking at this Technology to provide real time commentary of matches in not so distant future.
IBM would also be using its AI Technology to follow and look closely at the performance of every player.
Is this paving the way for live AI commentary ?
Imagine being able to watch a live event and being able to switch the commentary in the voice of your favorite commentator.
This could be possible by use of AI which could clone the voice and style of commentators or create new characters based on a bank of AI generated characters voices.
The Technology to clone voices and create AI voice fonts is already there so if those driving the tech decide to clone the voice of a leading commentator then technically it is very much possible.
However currently IBM is not doing this and would be using a generic voice to do the commentary.
Though prior to this there has been an announcement coming from the European broadcasting union’s decision earlier this month that the cloned voice of the commentator Hannah England will be used to provide commentary for the European Athletics Championships.
Should you be worried like Gary?
Whenever there is a new tech that is slated to be a game changer then people get worried.
When offices started deploying computers there was resistance to learn and the employees went on strikes saying that the computers would take away their Jobs.
Today the computers have created so many Jobs and an entire industry.
At the end of the day it is we the humans who are in the driving seat and decide how to use and deploy the Technology.
The new Technology of Artificial Intelligence is a game changer for sure and at the same time part of a technical evolution that would create a lot of new Jobss in its field.
So those who are willing to learn the skills and adapt to the new challenges would make the most of this opportunity called AI or Artificial Intelligence.
Conclusion
Change and evolution are part of life and there is no getting away from it. Our species has evolved over time and developed better tools and methologies to do things.
Had it not been the case we would still have been food gatherers or cave dwellers who chose to give up on growth and opportunities.
So our best chance is to be a part of the change and make the most of the opportunities that come our way.
