The impact of artificial intelligence in this era is undeniable, however we want to see it, both positively and negatively. With this post I do not seek to make a judgment for or against, but rather to explore objectively what AIs represent, recognizing inescapable truths. For better or worse, AI exists.
Even the creator of one of the most influential AIs, OpenAI, the father of ChatGPT and Dall-E, recognizes the importance of monitoring its use for potential abuse. In a recent communication, the company expressed its commitment to prevent its tools from interfering in the electoral processes that will take place this year in several countries.
OpenAI's genuine concern arises in a political context that is known to be not very transparent. Politics is dirty, and political actors resort to any means to confuse voters and discredit their opponents. The challenge for the common citizen, like you and me, will lie in discerning between fact and fiction. This year will be madness, a great avalanche of deepfakes on social networks, where, unfortunately, some seals will applaud without understanding that they are part of an elaborate circus show.
The incorporation of AIs into the already muddy terrain of politics generates fear, and if we add to that social networks and other media, even Oppenheimer would hallucinate with that bombshell. Social networks greatly influence people, leading them to make decisions driven more by emotion than reason.
Reading between the lines of OpenAI's statement, one can glimpse the real risk of abuses to come. Although they promise vigilance over proper use, human cunning could circumvent such controls. Moreover, their products are not the only ones on the market; there are hundreds more, equally or more powerful, such as Google's and Microsoft's solutions.
Avoiding chaos will be a difficult challenge; fake news will be the order of the day. Our only weapon will be doubt, urging us to verify again and again, so as not to become mere replicators of information without discernment.
