About a year ago I contacted @joetunex about splinterlands. I think I had about 900$ and wanted to throw it in. Maybe I was way in over my head, maybe I wasn't. But deep down I felt like I was missing out, so I bought into this FOMO and that was how it began.
Back then I think the SPS airdrop was in the 4th month or thereabout and I bought about 88k DEC. I bought a few untamed cards as well, and if I looked back, I think the most relevant of these cards are the Djinn Oshannus and the Neutral melee card Sandworm.
I wasn't firstly interested in playing the game and this was probably because I was more excited about the DEC that was going to be airdropped.
It was a whole new world; I mean, learning strategies both in-game and in the economy. I had to read on my own after Joe did an incredulous job of schooling me.
I think we spent weeks going through which cards were good for beginners, which card was cheap but had a massive impact or utility on the battlefield, I think my spellbook came with some basic cards, I had this massive OG summoner, that I sold for $50 and bought other cards.
Every card I bought was purely Joe's ideas, and back then a Djinn Oshannus was 39$, I think a living Lava went as high as 20$, I did buy some of these relevant cards and was playing with the basic cards I had at my disposal.
Chaos Legion: A Smart Decision
Learning the abilities of the cards, how the summoners functioned and how the attack types took weeks. But after playing for a while, I decided to throw in that extra $400 to buy the Chaos legion packs.
This was because I wanted to grow my deck while earning SPS at the same time. I figured out that if I kept buying cards I might make the wrong choice, so I decided to let the system do that for me, I already had a few untamed cards and adding them up up chaos cards would make it easier to compete.
I kept building my collection Power until it got to 20k. I would say I've made progress, this is because I've grown in one year of playing, and having more resources might show this.
Loss Or Long-term
Although my deck is four times lower than the actual investment at the moment, but whose deck on splinterlands isn't? A djinn Oshannus for example is about $5 at the moment, but I wouldn't measure the dollar value, because I've won games which I've gotten a couple of decent hauls of DEC by using that sea beast, it's hard for you to equate that value because most times, we calculate the dollar value before utility.
However, I can't say I've taken any Profit, all has gone into reinvesting into the cards, but what I mostly do at the moment is to sell some vouchers, buy back hive, and power up a bit. This gives me a feeling of profit because voucher is an aspect of the game's economy that's been doing well.
The Advantage Of "OGing"
I mean, win or lose, I pretty much don't care. The thing is that splinterlands thrilled me, I mean, everyone jumped at DEFI a year ago, not really knowing how it would work, the fact that they were going to contribute to a pool and earn was exciting and this is how it was, I wouldn't say splinterlands was a new game, it's been here as steemmonsters in the steemit days.
But we must all agree then that #play2earn wasn't really a thing back in 2018, and the excitement for me was creating Another opportunity for myself. I must say that early adoption is both risky and potentially rewarding.
The players who bought into splinterlands are currently the real OGs, and the truth is they're rewarded mostly for their intuitive ability at discovering what might become "the thing" years later.
The blockchain is a place of opportunity and diversification, and one cannot afford to sleep on all these opportunities, I think a lot of people understood this.
So it's a year of playing splinterlands for me, and it's been exciting, the learning experience has been amazing and I've found time to adapt to all the constant changes that have been coming to the game, recently the game has gotten massive traction, players are putting more skin in the game and I'll like to see how this pay off unfolds once the market begins to boom again.
