What Is GHAWG?
#GHAWG is short for "God's Hog: A Watchful Guardian." This fictional story tells how David Guardia, a courier and business owner from Bayonne, New Jersey, US moved into the next phase of his life after spending the final ten years of his ailing father's life helping him.

After more light-hearted talk at the Hard Dog Cafe, we played tourist at the Pink Elephant Antique Mall. We made sure to get photographed with "figures" such as Marilyn Monroe, the Uniroyal Gal, Beach Boy, and the Harley Man.

🏍️ Once The Twins, The Kids, and Lindsay Etxeberria finished good-naturedly teasing David about why wife Rhonda was "glowing," they finished their meal and took time to play tourist in this part of southwestern Illinois.

Mount Olive was about seven and a half miles north of Livingston. Along the way we rode past Williamson, Staunton, and White City. To get back to Old Route 66, we had to take New Douglas Road east before taking Rezy Road north.

🏍️ As done many times before, and will likely happen a few more times before Felix Legion arrives in the major league city of Chicago, Illinois, US, this zapfic entry was a travel entry. This one shows how it was necessary to ride several paths in order to maintain as best as possible fidelity with path defined by the original Route 66.

Rezy Road connected with Double Arch Road. Taking the west fork put us back on Old Route 66, at least the part which aligned more or less with Interstate 55. At Route 138 we turned east toward Mount Olive to top up our tanks.

🏍️ This travel entry is a continuation of the previous zapfic entry. Within much of the state of Illinois, the legendary Route 66 is overlaid by Interstate 55 of the federal Interstate Highway System.

Somewhere between Mount Olive & Litchfield Rte 66 became Historic Rte 66. Once in Litchfield we made our way to the Litchfield Museum & Route 66 Welcome Center. After ice cream at Pizza Man & Ice Cream Man, we rode to Nilwood.

🏍️ This travel entry not only shows how existing roads were built on topof Route 66, but it also shows a couple of the attractions which can be found on the path believed to be that of the iconic Route 66.

To get to Nilwood, we rode noth and west past Barnett, west past Womac, and north past Standard City. In between Nilwood and Virden was Girard. Girard used to be part of the original alignment of Route 66. Later on, not so much.

🏍️ This travel entry shows how Route 66 adjusted and evolved over the years, sometimes shifting to new population centers, sometimes shifting away from locations which have lost population. Sadly, Girard is a town which falls into the latter category.

As we rode Historic Route 66 into Virden we passed by the Sav-Mor Pharmacy at the corner of Rte 4/N. Springfield Street and East Jackson Street. On one wall is a mural illustrating the history of the town founded by John Virden.

🏍️ This travel entry doubles as a tourist entry as it features a mural which had become integral to the town of Virden's identity not only as a town along Route 66 but also as a growing town on its own merits.

Once we documented the mural at Sav-Mor Pharmacy, we rode through Thayer and through Auburn. A couple of miles north of Auburn town limits is a 1.4 mile stretch of road from Curran Rd to Snell Rd which was paved with red brick.

🏍️ The 1.4-mile strecth of road from Curran Road to Snell Road is the only stretch of Route 66 (either when it was active or after it was decommisioned later in the 20th Century) paved by red brick.

Felix Legion rides through Illinois, the 8th state (going east) on Old Route 66. After a meal break where David Guardia explains to the rest of Felix Legion why Rhonda Bella Guardia was looking "radiant" despite not being with child, the crew continues its ride northeast through Illinois.
