It feels like ages since Land 1.5 went live and introduced the basics such as grain production and resource harvesting. The road to Land 2.0 will include an interim release being touted as Land 1.75. Let us break down what is coming.
Land 1.75 Changes
Firstly, Land 1.75 will add three new resources---wood, stone, and iron. Each resource will be tied to specific land types:
- Wood may be found in forests, jungles, tundras, and swamps.
- Stone can be extracted from deserts, canyons, and hills.
- Iron will be mined from mountains, badlands, and calderas.
Secondly, Grain production which was universally produced across different land types will not be restricted to plains, rivers, bogs, and lakes.
Thirdly, players will now need to balance multiple resources as mining SPS will require a combination of the different resources (including the new ones). To facilitate this new added complexity, the resource hub will be updated where players can trade and swap resources which will simulate trading hubs of yesteryears.
What This Means for Landowners
For an owner of two Land plots, these changes represent pros and cons. The pro side is that the Land gameplay will transform from a passive activity to a more active mechanism. The con is that these changes will introduce more complexity and require players to play the Land game actively.
Even if you do not have any Land plot, the new trading hub will open up a new trading opportunity to potentially capitalize on as long as the volumes are worth it. I truly do hope the UI will make these new additions to Land 1.75 an easy task to achieve. For those with vast regions of Land plots, it will become a chore if these new changes introduce more overhead.
The timeline for Land 1.75 is tentatively set for 2025 Q1, but as with most development projects, delays are possible.
The Economic Implications
The addition of new Land resources and updated resource hub could present new trading opportunities that may impact splinterlands economy could significantly impact Splinterlands' economy.
- With the introduction of an updated resource trading hub and new resources will result in more DEC being burnt, which will add to its flywheel effect and impact its sustainability in the long term.
- For the active and engaged players, an updated resource trading hub will provide players with more opportunities to trade within the splinterlands ecosystem.
- New liquidity pools will become available which will incentivise players with additional liquidity rewards and therefore potentially bring more players to the Land ecosystem.
Concluding Thoughts
When Land was announced in Land was in Oct 2020 at the height of Covid, there was so much excitement. At the time, Axie Infinity was a huge thing and was being billed as the new gig economy. And then going into 2021, it seemed like everyone in Web 3.0 was trying to create their own virtual Land, with even Facebook renaming themselves to meta and marketing their version of the "metaverse". Well, since then NFTs have lost most of their appeal and value. When Land 1.5 was released, there was excitement, but after a while, there was not much there in terms of core gameplay to keep the attention. Will Land 1.75 be a step towards fulfilling the original vision of an active, interconnected Land ecosystem in splinterlands?
What are your thoughts on the Land 1.75 update? Are you excited about the new resources and trading mechanics, or are you wary of the added complexity?
