Where does this end?
2 days ago the supreme court in Brazil voted unanimously to ban X completely in Brazil. 15 million Brazilian X-users are seperated from their account. No access is possible from the Brazilian territory. Except if they use a VPN to access it, but even that has been condemned by the supreme court. If anyone is caught accessing X via a VPN in Brazil, they will receive a fine of 50000 Reais, just about 6760 USD at today’s exchange rate.
All 5 judges of the supreme court have decided that thr ban on X is correct, after X decided not to appoint an official representative, which is obliged by Brazilian law. Chances are that Starlink will follow the same course and will be banned too, if it doesn’t appoint a legal representative. This would have incredible impact for people living in the Amazon region and cut them off from the rest of the world.
Where does this end?
Censorship and totalitarianism
The reaction from Elon Musk and former president Bolsonaro is one of disgust and they point at censorship disguised as justice. They call it a dangerous act of totalitarianism. In which I have to say they are correct. Freedom of speech is holy and nothing should stand in the way from that. No law can be important enough to make it lawful to silence people…
Let us hope no other countries follow this, and Brazil can be freed as soon as possible!
Sincerely,
