A gold Mexican peso coin is the oldest coin in the history of Mexican coinage.
All Gold Pesos have the same design on the reverse side, that of the Mexican Coat of Arms which is represented by a golden eagle that holds a serpent in its beak while perched on a cactus. They are engraved with “Estados Unidos Mexicanos”.
Gold Pesos Coins with different denominations have different obverse side designs.
There is the same image of Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla on the 2.5, 5 and 10 Gold Pesos, surrounded by the face value and mintage year inscriptions. Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was the leader of the Mexican War of Independence.
The two, twenty, and fifty Gold Pesos have different designs on their obverses.
