Web3 Gaming vs Gamefi: Understanding the Key Differences and On the Future of Hivernum

Web3 Gaming and Web GameFi may seem like the same thing at first glance to those who just want to participate and get a reward for it, but both have their objectives heading in different directions.

So, what's the difference between the two?

Web3 Gaming

Web3 Gaming is what I could simply call an integration of Social + Gaming. Imagine it this way, where finally, you truly own the items you acquire in the games. All the progress you achieve through it, from digital assets to the time invested, can yield significant returns. These games bring something new to the player, often related to digital property such as NFTs. Thanks to blockchain technology like Hive, for example, players have complete control over their in-game assets. Typically, in more extensive protocols, these assets can be tied to a broader ecosystem, as seen in Splinterlands, with assets functioning in SoulKeep.

GameFi

Now, if Web3 Gaming is about ownership and engagement with the game itself, GameFi is about earning, mostly through other investments that simulate Gamification. GameFi is where the investor finds money while having an experience similar to a game.

Here, you're not just playing or collecting things; you're really investing in something, whether through staking, trading tokens, and reaping the financial rewards from the returns. Perhaps Play2Earn doesn't fit perfectly into this style, unlike Web3 Gaming.

Many projects aim to appeal to this purpose, seeking to force investors to have attention and attachment to the project. Projects like YooShi, which have "liquidity farm" systems, or NFTs in the form of "Hash" to increase your earnings in staking. All of this sums up what the GameFi method is about.

Why on earth are you talking about this?

If you haven’t checked out my introduction post to my project Introducing Possibly the Next Best Game Powered by the Hive Network Called Hivernum Odyssey, take some time to read this content.

Since it's not just a web game, we needed to create an acceptable initial economy, so that in the future, we wouldn’t have mediocre valuation like some second-layer tokens. To put it simply, I intended to make HIVE the sole transaction token for the project. However, after better research and recommendations from others, it would be interesting to use the already created bridge by Inleo. As you know, the focus is on rewarding active players both in the game and within the Hive ecosystem, whether through comments, game posts, Hive Power, and various other factors.

Use of RC/Hive Power: The plan is to use this resource in some way to unlock access to places and options during Campaign Mode, as mentioned above, encouraging the use of the Hive network as well as showing all the potential that can be obtained from Web3 and Interaction between Blog Posts / Comments

I could integrate some interesting things from the InLeo platform via WebView, such as its simple account creation and authentication method through Web2 OAuth like Gmail and Twitter-X, or even its Thread method. Although the lack of open-source code makes things a little more complicated, or even impossible to do at the moment.
