A bit of hot news coming from Splinterlands as the release of a new ranking system for battle rewards and rank. You can read the official announcement here Splinterlands Ranked Battle Overhaul
In this article I want to go over my own feelings on the changes but then also highlight some important questions and such I've been seeing over on Splinterlands so we can see all aspects of how this might change things.
The Changes
The core of the changes are a pretty big overhaul of how the battle rankings work across ALL of splinterlands. These changes will go into effect Feb. 29th 2024. In general the entire system will become more simplified which will be welcomed for new players. It's also designed with the focus to always keep battling and trying to level yourself up in the rankings. And last but not least a new ranking system.
One big change is the removal of leaderboards from all but the top Champions. I gotta be honest though I would rather see this fully removed. I don't think having these rewards at the top encourage anyone to buy more, battle more or put anything into the game that makes it worth the DEC inflation.
The flat rating system means you'll get 20 rating points for a win and - 20 rating points for a loss. This more simplified version seems like a good start but I would prefer at least a little adjustment and calculation in terms of the point system at a later date. The more fine tuned it can be the better especially as the player base increases.
There's also a hard cap of 5,000 rating so if you hit 5,000 you're at the top of the top but you could still fight for Champion leaderboard rewards etc. This will also make it so no one account hoards all of the rewards and should instead be more evenly divided up across ALL active players who are ranking and playing.
Vouchers will once again have another use case being able to be burned for additional energy to do battles.
My Own Thoughts On This Change
A part of me really likes it, having a max level deck and still being stuck back here in bronze has really sucked the life and fun out of the game for me and I went primarily all land as of late. That being said if I'm able to use my max level cards now even at bronze levels (Which is how I think it will work) means I can now fully use my cards and battle skills to rank up and reach those higher levels. There was a time when your boy was in Champions lol
I don't expect the ranking system to be flushed out and more organized for a good week if not a little longer as it's going to take time to recalculate everyone and get everyone sorted to where they should be. Once that's done though my hopes are I'll be in at least gold steadily because of this change if not better. That's going to be the real factor for me as to if I'm enjoying these changes or not.
Other Things People Noted
Some people fear this will only bring back bots and massive multi accounts. Well I'm pretty sure the TOS is you can't use bots at all now so we shouldn't really have to worry about that. However there's nothing against multi accounts and honestly I don't think there should be. If you can have two max decks and continue to buy and use them I think you should be allowed to. I don't see how human multi accounts would be a bad thing for this game.
Some Closing Thoughts
In general there are fewer players right now and there's a massive hyper inflation from DEC, Chaos and Vouchers that needs to be gotten rid of some how. While reducing emissions is a possible solution it's not always the best. With a game like Splinterlands you can pretty much micro transaction everything. Now sure some people hate micro transaction games but it's clear that they work and generate a ton of revenue. The thing is those companies make all of the money, however with Splinterlands you own and earn a piece of that pie so I only see it being a positive move forward.
