Soulkeep, the five-year-old SPS airdrop, how is it going?
A couple of weeks ago I started updating on the status of various projects on Hive again. Some of them are dead or stagnant, others have remained stable, while still others are progressing and thriving.
One of these is certainly the prince of all play2earn games on Hive, namely Splinterlands.
I would like to say a few words in the future about the state of the game and some of its critical issues, but not this time. In general my opinion on the game is more than positive. I am convinced that the team working on the game has always behaved well towards players and investors, trying to maintain constant development of the gaming platform.
Today I would like to reflect on the SPS token (Splintershard), the game's Governance token.
What it means to be a governance token
My interpretation is that a Governance Token is similar to an action. I say similar, because whoever holds SPS does not actually own a share of the game, but has the right to express his opinion on some choices that involve him. This means that SPS owners are the closest thing to a shareholder or stakeholder, therefore a figure who has an interest in seeing the game thrive and to whom developers are accountable in trying to continuously generate a flow of value.
If this were not the case, these investors could decide to sell SPS shares, causing the price of the token and all gaming assets to drop.
For a Governance token it is therefore important to guarantee value to those who hold it and there are many ways to do this:
- Periodically distribute part of the earnings to stakeholders (as stocks that pay dividends do);
- Ensuring benefits to those who hold them, such as giving newly issued tokens to those who hold them;
- Increasing its value, guaranteeing new use cases;
There are certainly many other ways, providing partnerships with other projects or games, I won't be here to list them all.
Soulkeep Aka Splinterlands Tower Defense
In September 2022, @splinterlands announced a Splinterlands-themed Tower Defense game. The underlying tokens were always those of Splinterlands, namely DEC, SPS and VOUCHER. There was a sale of the game's first NFT decks, called NIGHTMARE, for $8, or 5,000 DECs and 1 VOUCHER.
Quick jump to the present day. The game isn't out yet and the company recently announced that it has handed development over to another studio. But this news doesn't interest us for now. We are interested in something that started on October 11, 2022. On that date, in fact, the Airdrop of SPS tokens for NIGHTMARE package holders began. This airdrop will last five years and end on 10 October 2027.
The idea of a five-year airdrop is therefore not something new that occurred with the launch of Arcade Colony, but it is a procedure already seen in the Splinterlands family. But to understand how it will go in the future, how is that first five-year airdrop going?
The Nightmare Packs
The first thing to go and see are the Nightmare packages. The first game packs. The first sale included 2,000,000 packages, at a price of $8, i.e. 5,000 DECs and 1 VOUCHER.
Currently, those same packages are worth about $1.63
In the meantime, however, DEC tokens have not lost their value and 5,000 DECs are still worth almost $5 today (5,000 x 0.0009810 = $4.905):

Looking at the individual tokens, we would have expected a VOUCHER package to be worth more or less $5 today, but instead it has seen a loss in value of around 80%.
The airdrop
As already mentioned, a daily airdrop of SPS tokens began on October 11, 2022 for all holders of VOUCHER packages on the gaming platform. This airdrop will last 5 years and end on October 10, 2027. This means there are 1321 days left until the end of the airdrop.
On the release date, I bought 12 NIGHTMARE packs. I had some VOUCHERS from SPS stakers, so I only had to add 60,000 DEC ($60) to buy them.
I checked how many SPS they provide me in a week and I get about 7 SPS, that is one SPS per day.
If this had been the case for the duration of the airdrop, I would have earned:
1 x 5 years x 365 days = 1825 SPS
The value of which today ($0.027) is approximately $50.
I wouldn't cover the cost of the packages, but we're close.
But what interests me most is the subsequent analysis...
Buy NIGHTMARE today
We said that a NIGHTMARE package today provides an Airdrop of approximately (1 / 12 =) 0.083 SPS, i.e. approximately $0.00225.
We also calculated that there are 1321 days left until the end of the airdrop, which will end on October 10, 2027.
This means that each package purchased today and held until expiration will provide (0.00225 x 1321 =) $2.97.
But on the market they are on sale for $1.63, this potentially means that each package, in addition to paying for itself, will give us SPS as a gift.
Some considerations
First of all, let's point out that this is not investment advice, but personal reflections that I make for myself and decide to share. Do your analyses.
Secondly, this is an analysis that is only valid if current conditions persist. But things could happen that bring about better or worse effects, for example:
- The game will never be released (causing the value of NIGHTMARE to collapse);
- The game exits (increasing the value of NIGHTMARE);
- The value of SPS collapses, making the reasoning no longer valid;
However, I am of the opinion that Splinterland would not let the project fall like this and would not abandon its stakeholders. It has always worked well to create value and the damage to its image would be too great.
Soulkeep, l'airdrop di SPS di cinque anni, come procede?
Da un paio di settimane ho ricominciato ad aggiornarmi sullo stato di vari progetti su Hive. Alcuni di essi sono morti o stagnanti, altri sono rimasti stabili, mentre altri ancora stanno progredendo e prosperando.
Uno di questi è sicuramente il principe di tutti i giochi play2earn su Hive, ovvero Splinterlands.
Vorrei spendere alcune parole in futuro sullo stato del gioco e su alcune sue criticità, ma non questa volta. In generale il mio giudizio sul gioco è più che positivo. Sono convinto che il team che lavora al gioco si sia sempre comportato bene nei confronti di giocatori ed investitori, cercando di mantenere uno sviluppo costante della piattaforma di gioco.
Oggi vorrei riflettere sul token SPS (Splintershard), il token di Governance del gioco.
Cosa significa essere un token di governance
La mia interpretazione è che un Token di Governance è simile ad una azione. Dico simile, perchè chi detiene SPS, non possiede di fatto una quota del gioco, ma possiede il diritto di esprimere la propria opinione su alcune scelte che lo coinvolgono. Questo significa che i possessori di SPS sono la cosa pià vicina ad un azionista o uno stakeholders, quindi una figura che ha un interesse a vedere prosperare il gioco e verso cui gli sviluppatori devono rendere conto nel cercare di generare continuamente un flusso di valore.
Se così non fosse, questi investitori potrebbero decidere di vendere le quote di SPS, facendo scendere il prezzo del token e di tutti gli asset di gioco.
Per un token di Governance è quindi importante garantire un valore a chi lo detiene e i modi per farlo sono molteplici:
- Distribuire periodicamente parte dei guadagni agli stakeholders (come fanno le azioni che staccano dei dividendi);
- Assicurando dei benefits a chi li detiene, come regalare token di nuova emissione a chi li detiene;
- Aumentando il proprio valore, garantendosi nuovi casi d'uso;
Ci sono sicuramente molti altri modi, fornendo partnership con altri progetti o giochi, non starò qui ad elencarli tutti.
Soulkeep Aka Splinterlands Tower Defense
Ne Settembre del 2022, @splinterlands annunciò un gioco Tower Defense a tema Splinterlands. I token alla base dello stesso erano sempre quelli di Splinterlands, ovvero DEC, SPS e VOUCHER. Ci fu una vendita dei primi mazzi di NFT del gioco, chiamati NIGHTMARE, al presso di 8$, ovvero 5.000 DEC e 1 VOUCHER.
Breve salto ai giorni nostri. Il gioco non è ancora uscito e recentemente la compagnia ha informato che ha passato lo sviluppo ad un altro studio. Ma questa notizia per ora non ci interessa. Ci interessa qualcosa iniziato l'11 Ottobre 2022. In quella data, infatti, è iniziato l'Airdrop di token SPS per i detentori di pacchetti NIGHTMARE. Tale airdrop durerà cinque anni e terminerà il 10 Ottobre 2027.
L'idea di un airdrop quinquennale quindi non è una novità avvenuta con il lancio di Arcade Colony, ma è una procedura già vista nella famiglia Splinterlands. Ma per capire come andrà in futuro, come sta andando quel primo aidrop quinquennale?
I Nightmare Pack
La prima cosa da andare a vedere sono i pacchetti Nightmare. I primi pacchi di gioco. La prima vendita prevedeva 2.000.000 pacchi, al prezzo di 8$, ovvero 5.000 DEC e 1 VOUCHER.
Al momento, quegli stessi pacchi valgono circa 1.63$
Nel frattempo però i token DEC non hanno perso il loro valore e 5.000 DEC ancora oggi valgono quasi 5$ (5.000 x 0.0009810 = 4,905$):
Mentre il token VOUCHER ha effettivamente ottenuto un grosso deprezzamento:
A vedere i singoli token, ci saremmo aspettati che oggi un pacchetto VOUCHER valesse più o meno 5$, mentre invece ha visto una perdita di valore di circa l'80%.
L'airdrop
Come già detto, dall'11 Ottobre 2022 è iniziato un airdrop giornaliero di token SPS per tutti i detentori di pacchetti VOUCHER sulla piattaforma di gioco. Questo airdrop durerà 5 anni e terminerà il 10 Ottobre 2027. Questo significa che mancano 1321 giorni alla fine dell'airdrop.
Alla data di uscita, comprai 12 pacchi NIGHTMARE. Avevo da parte di VOUCHER ottenuti come staker di SPS, per cui dovetti solo aggiungerci 60.000 DEC (60$) per comprarli.
Ho verificato quanti SPS mi forniscono in una settima e ottengo circa 7 SPS, cioè un SPS al giorno.
Se fosse stato così per tutta la durata dell'airdrop, avrei guadagnato:
1 x 5 anni x 365 giorni = 1825 SPS
Il cui controvalore odierno (0.027$ è circa 50$.
Non ci coprirei il costo dei pacchetti, ma poco ci manca.
Ma quello che più mi interessa è l'analisi successiva...
Comprare NIGHTMARE oggi
Abbiamo detto che un pacchetto NIGHTMARE fornisce oggi un Airdrop di circa (1 / 12 =) 0.083 SPS, cioè circa 0.00225$.
Abbiamo anche calcolato che mancano 1321 giorni alla fine dell'airdrop, che terminerà il 10 Ottobre 2027.
Questo significa che ogni pacchetto acquistato oggi e detenuto fino alla scadenza, fornirà (0.00225 x 1321 =) 2.97$.
Ma sul mercato sono in vendita a 1.63$, questo potenzialmente significa che ogni pacchetto oltre a ripagarsi, ci darà degli SPS in regalo.
Alcune considerazioni
Prima di tutto, precisiamo che non è un consiglio di investimento, ma delle riflessioni personali che faccio per me e decido di condividere. Fate le vostre analisi.
Seconda cosa, questa è una analisi che vale solo se le condizioni attuali permangono. Ma potrebbero succedere cose che portano effetti migliorativi o peggiorativi, per esempio:
- Il gioco non uscirà mai (facendo crollare il valore di NIGHTMARE);
- Il gioco esce (facendo alzare il valore di NIGHTMARE);
- Crolla il valore di SPS, rendendo il ragionamento non più valido;
Sono comunque dell'idea che Splinterland non lascerebbe cadere così il progetto e non abbandonerebbe i suoi stakeholders. Ha sempre lavorato bene per creare valore e il danno di immagine sarebbe troppo grande.
