There are so many things that Hive can do to enhance the value of the ecosystem. One of the most basic features of the blockchain is account management. This is something we overlook yet can be extremely important in the future.
Hive offer censorship resistant posting. This stems from the fact that people have true account ownership. There is no company or entity which can close down an account. This means the account holder is in full control. The only requirement is to protect the private key. As long as that is accessible, the account can be utilized.
This is one of the many areas where Hive can differentiate itself. It has the opportunity to target a major use case of the Internet which is sitting right under our noses.
Leveraging this means that we could see hundreds of millions of people utilizing a Hive account. Ultimately, it all comes down to have fast we want to grow the system.
We know the names that control the Internet.
What do they all have in common?
One of the first things we must notice is they have the ability to sign into different sites. Over the years, these entities evolved into gatekeepers not only on their own systems but also others. How common is it to see a Log In with Facebook notification when we go to a site?
Entities like to tap into this simply because there is no network admin effort required. Facebook happily takes care of all of it. The trade-off, naturally, is people are being tracked in all they do.
What if we offered another option? Imagine a day were we had banners that said "Log in with Hive".
When it comes to unseating the incumbents, every level of their operation has to be targeted. The sign in process is one of the major ones.
This is an idea that Vitalik agrees with. He recently had this to say about the topic:
If you can get signed in with Ethereum to work and if you can unseat Facebook and Google and Twitter as the login overlords of the internet, that itself is a huge opportunity, right?“
Of course, his idea is for Ethereum to act as the operator. This is likely an improvement over Google or Facebook yet still leaves some things lacking. To start, there are major questions about what is taking place on that chain.
Nevertheless, we can see how this is important when it comes to the dismantling of the existing system.
Making Hive Accounts Valuable
By working in this direction, we are able to add enormous value to having a Hive account. This opens up a much wider spectrum. At present, Hive accounts are only used on projects designed on Hive. If we can focus upon becoming a log in mechanism, we can see how the efforts of non-Hive platforms suddenly feed into this.
Building the value of Hive accounts is not something we typically consider. Of course, there is the rewards and what is being held in a wallet that people focus upon. However, as a feature of the Internet, this is overlooked.
If one can sign into different sites without being worried about tracking, at least from the sign in account manager, along with true censorship resistance, that would be a major step forward in Web 3.0.
We are all aware of how the Internet is completely controlled by Web 2.0 companies.
One of the key concepts is to take a bottom up approach. Can we keep building on the most basic of features, adding value every step of the way? Using Hive as a sign in mechanism is very powerful.
At the base layer, the account management system is a standard feature that operates without a hitch. Anyone, within or outside of Hive can access this. This will likely be enhanced as HAF becomes more popular with developers.
It is easy to overlook how we can make even having a Hive account very valuable. Consider how limited one is if he or she did not have a Facebook, Google, or Twitter account. Access to portions of the Internet are unavailable.
We need to concentrate upon positioning Hive in this manner. We have a power (and reliable) account management system right on the blockchain. This operates in a decentralized manner with the Witnesses all running the software.
This is another basic feature of Hive can be add to the value of the ecosystem going forward.
