Grok is the LLM developed by xAI. This is integrated into the X platform. Upon release, it was a feature available to those with X Premium.
This changed as the company opened it up to non-premium users.
At this point, I am not aware of the limitations placed upon free users. I would believe there are some limits with regards to the prompts one can do each day or perhaps features such as image generation.
Whatever the difference, this is a step forward. To start, since I am not a premium user, it allows me to test it out. More importantly, it is a way for X to garner more data.
Ultimately, that is what matters in this game.
Grok Goes Free On X
As stated in my discussion about LeoAI, one of the targets for these models is Google search. This is where a lot of traffic is available.
Consider the process: Someone is on a social media platform, such as X. Something comes up which more information is desired. The user jumps to another tab, opens up Google, and does a search.
Looking at the image above, we can see how Grok operates.
I prompted a query about TikTok being banned in the United States. Like most models, I received original content generated by in reponse (synthetic data).
Grok, also similar to a few other models, provides a lit of resources. What is interesting is that it provides both Web pages (on the left) and blog posts on X (on the right).
For this screenshot, I opened up the Web pages.
Consider the power of this. Thre is no need to land on Google or any other seach engine. If I want to visit the pages, I simply click on one and it takes me directly there.
Advertising Model
Google, along with Meta, is one of the largest advertising platforms. Google search is also one of the most popular Web pages with regards to traffic.
How badly could this hurt?
Obviously, YouTube is a Google property meaning anything it integrates will be from its model. However, Meta and X are going to utilize their own LLMs. The key is retention and keeping the user on their sites.
Of course, X goes one step further by having the results being blog posts which are on the X platform. This means that a user does not even have to leave the site to get the information.
Here is where the advertising model changes completely.
X shares ad revenue. This could really feed into the experience of content creators.
Ad revenue is typically based upon clicks. On X, this translates to views. If someone uses Grok to get an answer, and then clicks on a blog post, more traffic, i.e. views, are given. This could feed into the earnings of the content creator.
From the perspective of X, the goal is to create a self contained system. Information on the platform is crucial. As entities post more, it only enhances the earning capability of both the content creator and X itself.
This model will likely be followed by Meta and its family of applications. Of course, this is something for LEO to follow too.
It is the new paradigm that companies will implement.
