For most of my life I've always had the travel bug. I have never enjoyed living in one place for too long because there is so much out there in the world to see. During the 1990's I moved to the Caribbean for just that reason. The adventure of new places and so many islands out there to explore. It was also one of the enjoyable parts of my life. If you haven't been it's well worth the trip.
I lived mainly in Puerto Rico at the time since there was so much to do there as well as a steady source of income. As I have mentioned in past posts at the time American Airlines had puddle jumper specials on the weekends to different islands in the Caribbean for $39.99 US round trip. I remember one special came up to Barbados, so a few friends and I all took a diving trip down to Barbados!
Barbados is interesting in that it is the most eastern island in the Caribbean often considered to be an Atlantic island vs a Caribbean one. Like most of the islands in the Caribbean they were fought over by the Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and the British. It was first colonized by the Spanish introducing wild boars to the island but after a few years they abandoned the island leaving only the boars behind. The English settled the island in the 1600's eventually becoming a commonwealth in the 1960's and a completely free republic in 2021.
Back to the diving trip, it has beautiful reefs and ship wrecks to explore in beautiful clear waters. I remember seeing several sea turtles and gorgeous fish everywhere. One of the best places I've ever gone diving! While I was there I picked up a few silver coin souvenirs like I've done since I was a kid.
The one I'm sharing today is of Neptune king of the Sea. It's a beautiful coin that I picked up in a shop in Bridgetown. I have always loved the coins that are associated with the oceans, especially those from the Caribbean and South America. This coin is a real beauty, have a look:
About the coin:
Country: Barbados
Denomination: Ten Dollars
Composition: 92.5% silver
Mint: The Franklin Mint, Pennsylvania, USA
Mintage: 57,000
Weight: 37.9 grams
Diameter 42 mm
Edge: Reeded
Engraver: Nathan Philip
Reverse: Neptune the God of the Sea holding his trident and denomination
Obverse: National arms with lettering Pride and Industry
I have always loved the detailing on the coin. the coat of arms with a Dolphinfish and a Pelican. Neptune has great detailing. But it was produced by The Franklin Mint who always produced high quality coins! The series was produced from 1973 until 1981 and they really aren't too hard to find. If you're looking to start a collection of Caribbean coins this wouldn't be a bad place to start. |
If you ever have the chance Barbados is a beautiful place to visit and well worth the trip. As always I want to thanks all my supporters here on Hive, I really appreciate all of your support and friendship. If you have any suggestions, comments, or questions please feel free to leave them below and thank you for taking the time to read over my post!
And my disclaimer: Gold and silver stacking can be a fun hobby but isn't for everyone. You can lose money. I'm not a financial advisor and this isn't financial advice, please always do your own research before spending your hard earned money.
