Barely a month has passed since Microsoft announced the availability of Bing with ChatGPT, the new version of its search engine equipped with that conversational part thanks to the OpenAI artificial intelligence engine. The reception of this platform has been remarkable not only thanks to its lights, but despite its shadows.
100 million. Microsoft stuck out its chest when indicating yesterday how the barrier of 100 million daily active users (DAU) of Bing has been crossed. As Yusuf Medhi, the head of this division, explained, "this is a surprisingly remarkable number, and yet we are fully aware that we are still a small company, with a market share of less than 10%. Having said that, feel free! good to be at the dance!"
New users. Of those 100 million users who use the new Bing every day, a third had never used it before. That is undoubtedly another good piece of information for the growth of a search engine that has in fact been expanding its access with a system of invitations. Without that system, growth could have been higher.
Prometheus improves. The Bing deployment with ChatGPT is based on the evolved model of GPT-3, called Prometheus, and here Microsoft and OpenAI continue to collaborate to improve its behavior. For example, they recently introduced that "personality" choice into responses.
Not all users chat. It is curious to discover that, as Microsoft indicates, only a third of users use their new "Chat" option (ChatGPT) on a daily basis. "On average we are seeing about three chats per session with over 45 million total chats since this preview started."
Mobile powers Bing. A few days ago, Microsoft announced the launch of Bing with ChatGPT on Android and iOS, and according to the company, this has been an even more decisive factor for the growth in the use of the mobile search engine. According to Redmond's internal data, that "has led to a 6x increase in daily active users over pre-launch levels."
And that, despite everything. Bing's new conversational engine was quickly put to the test and it was verified how, in addition to helping us, he also invented, he was wrong —something that was already known about ChatGPT— and he ranted in a worrying way. That caused Microsoft to put a lot of limits on its use – which has made everything more boring – although it has been easing them slightly in recent days. Right now it allows 10 chats (questions) per session before telling you to start a new one. In total, 120 chats are allowed per day.
