What's up plebs?
Today I want to show you a coin I bought a long time ago, at spot price if memory serves me right.
No German silver this time, although pretty close. A 25 Schilling coin from 1961, commemorating the land of burgers or something!
Looks like we have a church of some kind with the following text:
40 JAHRE BURGENLAND
1921-1961
For
40 Years of Burgenland
1921-1961
Aahhh, Burgen. Not burger. Turns out it is the easternmost and least populous state of Austria, consisting of two statutory cities and seven rural districts, with a total of 171 municipalities. After doing some reading on the place, it seems it's best known for its excellent wines, the stunning landscapes and castles. Sounds like a great place for me, maybe I'll visit it one day :D
As for the church on the coin, it's a depiction of the Bergkirche, a church in Eisenstadt, the capital of the state of Burgenland in Austria:
The church (of Catholic denomination) was built in the early 18th century by Prince Paul EsterhƔzy. Eisenstadt was the seat of the EsterhƔzy family, and the church lies just a short walk to the west of the family's main palace. source
Here's a photo from the exterior:
And one from the inside of the dome
Other than being a beautiful church it's also the final resting place of Franz Joseph Haydn, famous Austrian composer of the Classical period dabbed by many as the "Father of the Symphony" and "Father of the String quartet". As a result the church is a really popular touristic destination, especially amongst lovers of the genre:
The Haydn Mausoleum is located right under the north tower of the Haydn Church. It is the famous composer's dignified and evocative place of burial.Thousands of music lovers from all corners of the globe visit the mausoleum every year. source
Ok, I think I got this side covered. Feel free to visit any of the links above if you want to learn more.
Now let's flip the coin and see what we have on the other side:
If you like flags and stuff this is a coin for you. Like the couple few other Austrian coins I have shown you, we have the nine heraldic shields of the Austrian provinces.
And finally the engraved edge
It reads
FUENFUNDZWANZIG SCHILLING
For
TWENTY-FIVE SHILLINGS
Well...quite self explanatory. And boring š
When it comes to silver we have a modest 13 g of 0.800 purity, giving us a total of 10.4 g of pure silver. An okayish amount :)
And now let's see some more shots I took:
Ok friends this is it for today's coin!
A bit meh for me design-wise, but now I have a new place to visit in my bucket list thanks to it š
