As you know I mostly get my silver pieces for spot price, which means I don't get much say on their design and stuff.
However, every now and then even old pleb me will get lucky and score something that really satisfies his taste.
And today we have one of those pieces 😎
Unfortunately, I couldn't get the coin right on the photos, it looks much better from up close. And it has a really nice grainy surface. I could probably get much better photos if I took it out of the plastic capsule but I don't want any silly fingertips on it 😃
As I have said a few times in the past I have a thing for animal themed coins so naturally I love this piece.
I also like the minimalistic design, barely informing us that it's a commemorative Finish 100 markkaa coin for the 350th anniversary of the University of Helsinki, minted in 1990.
The symbolisms are pretty clear. An owl symbolizing wisdom, suitable for a university coin. And a harp representing the university's cultural and academic heritage.
The coin is quite chunky at 24 g with a purity of 0.830. Very nice!
And it comes with an engraved edge which is always great to have
It reads
POHJOISESTA JA MEREN PUOLELTA HÄN HEIDÄT KOKOSI
For
FROM THE NORTH AND THE SIDE OF THE SEA HE GATHERED THEM
I couldn't find much on the inscription so I asked chatgpt, dunno if legit or made up nonsense
The inscription poetically references the university's role in uniting scholars and students from various regions, particularly from the north and coastal areas of Finland. It symbolizes the institution's mission to gather knowledge and people from diverse parts of the country, reflecting Finland's geographical identity and the university's commitment to inclusivity in education.
Here are some more pics I took for your viewing pleasure:
Ok friends, this concludes yet another piece from collection!
See you soon with more shiny 😉
