Sexy lions!

in #hive-1679222 years ago

It's been a while since I posted a silver piece! So, here are two sexy English shillings I have in my possession, minted in 1929 and 1930:

Imo, these lions are pretty sick, especially the finer details if we zoom a bit:

As for the old fella on the other side, he is King George V:

George V( George Frederick Ernest Albert; 3 June 1865 – 20 January 1936) was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 6 May 1910 until his death in 1936. He was the second son of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, and was third in the line of succession to the British throne behind his father and elder brother, Prince Albert Victor. From 1877 to 1892, George served in the Royal Navy, until the unexpected death of his elder brother in early 1892 put him directly in line for the throne. On Victoria's death in 1901, George's father ascended the throne as Edward VII, and George was created Prince of Wales. He became king-emperor on his father's death in 1910. source

To give you some perspective, the late Princess Elizabeth whom you probably have heard was his latest grand daughter.

Ok that's enough history for today.

Let's talk a bit about the actual coins. The front reads in Latin "GEORGIVS V DEI GRA:BRITT:OMN:REX" for "George the Fifth by the Grace of God King of all the Britains".

On the back we have the minting date, denomation and inscribed in Latin "FID·DEF IND·IMP" for "Defender of the Faith Emperor of India".

No inscriptions on the edge of the coin:

When it comes to silver, these babies are 0.500 pure, each with a weight of 5.66 g. So that's 2.83 g of silver per coin. With today's spot price, that's about 1.55 $ worth of silver per coin.

Here's some more info from numista with more technical details:

old British coins are a hype now :)

it seems the younger coin (from 1930) was used a lot more than the previous from 1929 :D

Decent coins, is age the reason why the first is darker than the second coin?

No, I came on it 😃

These are really quite sexy

The lion on the back looks a little stoned…. Nice additions

Those lions know how to party!

Curious to see how the mug of old Charles will look on the upcoming coins and banknotes

Oh god, I hope they skip him

It's really sexy! The higher the price, the sexier it will be.

Nice coin. The crown definitely shows how much of a king that lion is.

Feels good to know about this coins and the Lion and personality engraved on them!! Nice post!

I got 2 as well but yours are in really good condition but one of mine is a 1916 and is sterling

Nice! George V.
I like the reverse very much! Love the Lion on top of the crown.
A wonderful specimen for your collection, @trumpman!

Quite old silver tokens and I must say that the Lions are pretty majestic, great design! While I saw how much silver they have and their value (just silver), I wonder how much you have paid to add them to your collection...

About 2-3 euros if I remember right!

With the start of the world great depression in 1929 and ending in 1939 these Shillings bought more than just a hearty meal.

The Silver coin is nice. I didn't know the English shillings contain any silver until now !

Now you do!

The Lions don't really have weight in the coin 🤣🤣

The coins looks pretty nice but very old.

That creature looks more like a pokemon than an actual lion tbh. Personally, I prefer the hot ladies on top of my coins 😂😂

Vaporeon ?!

It's a F fine quality coin, I have one of his coin with Mary issued by Delhi Durbar, I guess this one is also issue by the same authority.

You know this family is actually of German decent and it came from Georg I "Saxe-Coburg-Gotha", but due to show off themselves as Brits they just changed the real surname to something that suited their English heritage. 😏😶

Talking about the lion it looks starving with tongue out of his mouth, sick really typical of monarchs.

F as in fuck?

Oh come on grow up,,.. 😀 an extra F. !LOLZ

How do locomotives know where they're going?
Lots of training
