Sexy Oyster 👀

in #hive-1679222 years ago

It's been a while since the last time I made a post about an individual silver piece from my collection. So today I want to present you one that imo looks like a real piece of art!

It is a minimalistic piece, without much text or other fluff. A $1 coin from the Bahamas minted in 1973.

On the observe, we have a sight that is very common in coins and needs no introduction, a young Queen Elizabeth:

As for the reverse, an oyster, or technically a Conch shell (strombus alatus):

Strombus alatus, the Florida fighting conch, is a species of medium-sized, warm-water sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Strombidae, the true conchs. This conch occurs in the Western Atlantic Ocean from North Carolina to Florida and the Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana, Texas, and the east coast of Mexico.[ source and more info

As you can see in the photos, there isn't much text on any of the sides. The observe simply reads:

COMMONWEALTH OF THE BAHAMA ISLANDS ELIZABETH II

And the reverse:

ONE DOLLAR 1973

This piece isn't just beautiful. It's chunky as well, with a weight of 18.14 g, just look how a standard 1 euro coin pales in comparison:

The silver purity is quite good too, 0.800. Which translates to 14.5 grams of silver. With today's spot price (0.66$) that's 9.5 $ worth of silver. Neato!

Here's some more info about the coin from numista in case you are interested:

All in all a beautiful chunky piece. Definitely one of my favorites!

Nice piece! I had to dump all my silver a while back, but still appreciate some nice coinage. I have been collecting it in the form of solar panels and then extending to collecting brass and lead in the form of high powered projectiles, lol.

Oh shut up 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Hey, everyone has their own form of precious metals, lol.

Beautiful!
Stack on, @trumpman !

Do you have any Romanian coin?

Not yet!

I had a whole bucket of old coins at my grandpa's house when I was a kid and wal playing with them. I don't remember the exact years of these, but they were pretty old. If I find any of em... ever I'm sending some to you FOR FREE.

I'll take em 😂

Yeah you should look for them, chances are if they are old there there's some silver there! And if they are in good condition there could be lots of numismatic value !

I really have no clue. All I can remember is that I was playing with some old Romanian coins at my grandpa's house when I was a kid. That was some thirty years ago and these were a long time out of use. Never developed a passion for such things though...

This peice is quite beautiful and at times I am wondering it should be worth much more than $10 than even $1

Thanks again @trumpman. Real Silver Dollars are a good way to store the value of wealth. Available from many different Countries.

Real silver dollars are the best dollars!

that shell looks like my Grandmothers coochie

😂

That's a beautiful coin

🥰

Look better

I wasn't expecting an oyster to be on the back of a coin but it's a nice idea. It is making me crave some seafood because I haven't had any lately.

You have created a Precious Gem!

All Bahama coins have some neat artwork on them. They commemorate everything with a coin. Nice grab

Bahamas take celebrations of Columbus Day like no other country with more coins celebrating that Explorer and his Ships. I usually keep my eye out at Shows and coin stores on Bahamian coins.
A very nice coin @trumpman

Sounds cool, I guess I should try and get more coins from there!

much knowhow

Great coin and I must confess that I admire your passion and hobby for coins. I am too trying to collect some and was thinking of going to a flea market and maybe find some, but I have one question: is there a way to see if a coin is silver or not, is it marked somehow or how can I see that. Do you know of any photo recognizing software that might tell me info on the go if I take a snapshot to get more details...?

Just Google denomination, year + numista :)

There are other tricks too too get a feeling though if you don't have internet. Being old, prior to 1950 for example
