What's up plebs?
I am back with yet another one of those silver Austrian coins I have been sharing lately.
Let's first see some shots before learning more about it:
This one is probably one of the most simplistic ones, featuring what appears to be a Catholic cathedral and the bare minimum text to identify it. "Mariazell 1157 -1957", which makes me assum it was built in 1157. And that the coin celebrates its 800th birthday.
Indeed, this 25 schilling coin was issued in 1957, to commemorate the 8th centennial of the Mariazell Basilica. Also known as Basilica Mariä Geburt (Basilica of the Birth of the Virgin Mary), it is a Roman Catholic church building in Mariazell, an Austrian city in the southeastern state of Styria.
The church was founded on December 21, 1157 and is the most important Christian pilgrimage destination the country has to offer. And one of the most visited shrines in Europe. It's probably best known for the "miraculous" wooden image of virgin Mary if you believe in that stuff.
I am not much of a believer so I just heard of it while writing this post and after checking some photos and videos I must admit it looks like a really beautiful and impressive place to visit. Added to my bucket list!
Here's a video showing the church and the surrounding area
Anyways, google is your best buddy if you wish to learn more about the place. Lots more videos, articles and reviews :)
Now let's move on to the other side of the coin
If you follow my posts you see nothing new here! Just the denomination and the heraldic shields of the Austrian states.
Same applies to the edge of the coin:
It reads
FUENFUNDZWANZIG SCHILLING
For
25 schillings
Yeah. Boring. Once again a missed opportunity to have something more interesting instead of just the denomination 😂
When it comes to silver we have the usual recipe. 13 g of 0.800 purity, giving us a total of 10.4 grams of pure silver.
Here are some more quick stats from Numista in case you care!

And that pretty much concludes today's coin. Imo it's a beautiful, simplistic piece and it gave me a new place for my travel bucket piece. I like it!
