The Zoo Master (that's me silly!) doesn't like paying too much for coins not made off precious metals.
But recently he made an exception when he discovered a series called The Wonderful World of Insects from Germany.
I believe the series started in 2022 and every year the German mint issues a few new designs. So far they have released 9 different coins and as you'd expect from their name, each features prominently a different insect.
These coins have a face value of 5 euro and they are imo quite cute. Unfortunately they are not made off silver and they have a ridiculous starting price of about 8 euro.
The German government has decided to mint a €5 collectors’ coin entitled “Seven-spot ladybird”, to be issued on 9 March 2023. It is the second coin issued as part of the “Wonderful world of insects” series, which will see a total of nine coins with partially coloured motifs issued over the period 2022-24. The series is intended to bring into focus – especially in light of current developments (insect extinction) – a special group of animals that make up a significant part of our natural heritage. source
Although I didn't buy all 9 designs, I did buy two of them as my son loves insects (and so do I) and hopefully it's something he will appreciate in the future. I just wish they were cheaper, I would buy the whole series.
So the two I featured my two favorite insects. Ms. ladybug and Mr Dragonfly !
Let's check em out!
Really cute, right?
Also I love what they have done with the imperial eagle on the other side of the coin, giving him insect like wings:
As I said, it's a pity these cute little coins aren't made of silver but instead of some silly Copper-nickel alloy, despite their somewhat high price. Plus with a mintage of over a million, they are not even rare to justify their price...Oh well. Maybe one day their price drops all and I'll buy the rest of the designs to complete my set!
