The Island Overlooking the Lake: "Isola Maggiore" and its Secrets

After several busy months without any holidays, Easter finally brings with it the first long weekend of the year, with four days off - Saturday through Tuesday - that can be taken advantage of to get some rest, switch off your brain and enjoy a few quiet moments.

The coming of Spring is also bringing with it warmer temperatures, tempting people to take walks and organize some trips out of town.

Sadly, these very days over Tuscany the weather is always cloudy, due to a perturbation that came straight from the Sahara and dragged along dust and sand, which make the sky perpetually gray/yellow... a pretty depressing color combination, but as long as it doesn't rain that doesn't stop me and my girlfriend from setting off on some exploration!

And the destination this weekend was the second largest island of Lake Trasimeno, i.e. Isola Maggiore, so called because not far away is another smaller island and for this reason called Isola Minore.

To reach Isola Maggiore - unless you want to go for a swim in the lake 😂 - you have to take a ferry that leaves, amongst others, from the small pier of a town called Tuoro sul Trasimeno, from where you can already see both islands.

Tuoro's pier is really small, but adorned with some sculptures that depict elements of the Lake and its fauna.

20240330_120356.jpg

As in other lake towns, a small beach is also available, although not yet usable as yet, since the bathing season has yet to begin.

When the ferry finally arrived, it's time to board and head to Isola Maggiore, taking the opportunity to take some closer photos of the island.

The trip is very short - about 10 minutes - and extremely quiet.

Upon reaching our destination we find waiting for us a tiny village, now almost completely uninhabited: once there were about 600 inhabitants living here, but today there are only 7 residents, and the largest portion of the population is made up of tourists and people who come to the island only for work.

In spite of this, the island is very pretty, well-maintained, full of buildings of historical and artistic interest and unique well-kept corners.

Among the places to visit are the ever-present Churches - including the Parish Church of St. Michael Archangel, with Renaissance frescoes by famous Umbrian and Perugian schools -, the Captain's House, some ruins of ancient Churches now practically forgotten, and small Chapels, often dedicated to St. Francis, who spent a Lent on the island.

20240330_150418.jpg

20240330_140231.jpg

There are also an incredible number of rabbits on the island: never seen so many all together in my life! A few pheasants are also seen around, as well as numerous species of lake birds.

20240330_153520.jpg

On the south side of the island also stands a 14th-century castle, but unfortunately it could not be visited and was covered entirely by the vegetation around it.

A pity, since even just seeing it from the outside would have been interesting....

20240330_154623.jpg

Following the various paths around the island it takes about three to four hours to see the whole island a little bit, through paths that, starting from the pier, then allow you to get to the highest part of the island and eventually to the opposite side, while being able to admire glimpses of the lake from different viewpoints.

20240330_144933.jpg

20240330_150605.jpg

20240330_140158.jpg

Finally, a little curiosity: around the island I found some crosses that reminded me a lot of the famous Templar Order Cross, although I could not find any certain information about whether these are the same or are just some kind of cross that looks like it.

20240330_155357.jpg

20240330_141012.jpg

And so ends the complete tour of the island and it is time to go back: the ferry is full to the brim but, after another short crossing, we are already ashore and ready to head back home :)

Hive Power Up Day - April 1st 2024

Just 7 people in a city?

How does that work?

Gats be lonely when tourist season is over...

I believe that the few inhabitants might all have their own small boat and use it to reach mainland when they need something, as I haven't seen any store on the island (besides some shops, bar and restaurants which were clearly only for tourists and are surely closed during most of the year). Mainland is very close, so I guess their life shouldn't be too different from the one of those who live isolated in the middle of countryside or mountain areas.

Gats be lonely when tourist season is over...

That's for sure 😂 but I guess they love silence and calm!
