I am lucky to have had many great weekend outdoor experiences. I remember when I was young every weekend was good. Growing up in Melbourne, Australia and liking sport mean very Saturday at 2pm was the Victoria Football league starting time. If we could not go to a game we would be listening to it on the radio playing outside. I can just smell the freshly cut wet grass as lots of people in the neighbourhood had got home from junior sport and were getting yard chores done so they could relax for the afternoon and listen to the games unfold.
Things don't stay the same. The VFL became the national AFL, I moved to Queensland and had my own family. Queensland was very different to Victoria but we had a local Australia Rules Football team. My son and I both got involved and there we many good times.
Melbourne is still the biggest place for AFL, so one weekend back in 2014 a small group of fathers, sons, coaches and players from our little local Queensland Club organised cheap carry on luggage flight, down to the AFL heart land. We got to see 4 live games . Friday night, The old regular 2pm Saturday game then walked straight to a Saturday night game. We flew home after the 4th game on Sunday afternoon.
It was a great trip, we got to see a bit of Melbourne, more football than any of us had ever seen in one weekend. There was not too much drinking as the boys were all under age. We shared multiple rooms in the same hotel walking distance to everything.
The football games were good but the team and father son bonding was probably the highlight.
