I had an awesome day today. I had a dinner celebrating my grandpa's 84th birthday with my mom's side of the family. After that I went to watch Moana 2 with my cousin; the movie had a good story and the animation was nice but for me there was just too much singing. Anyways, today I want to discuss about luck and whether I believe in it or working hard creates it.
For me, I feel I sit in the middle. I do believe there is luck. If I'm playing snakes and ladders, there's no way that game is not luck. That's a game of chance and you need luck to win. You can say the same thing about poker but there's some degree of control with how good you're at bluffing and knowing the hand win %'s but you can still lose from an opponent pulling some god flops. I believe this applies to many things that are outside of our control. If it's outside of our control, it's luck. There are some people that are lucky and get born into a filthy rich family and never have to worry about money. Don't get me wrong they could have other issues in life but money wouldn't be a problem for them whereas there are a lot of people out there struggling right now just barely getting by. For me, I'm fortunate that I was able to grow up comfortably. My mom was able to put food on the table and provide my brother and me with many opportunities to experience things like sports, piano etc. I'm grateful for that but I also feel that I'm lucky because of this. I can't imagine being an orphan or growing up in a super poor family etc.
Then of course there are definitely ways where hard work creates "luck". Opportunities come by and they aren't just handed for free sometimes. For example, there are people that study hard and get good grades. That's how they get scholarships; they put the work in and they applied for these scholarships. Scholarships aren't just going to come to someone by luck. There's effort needed to be made by an individual. A personal example for me could be when I was playing tennis when I was younger. There was a time I was obsessed about tennis; I would ask my mom to drop me at Broadstone Racquet club. I would be there from morning to night. I would play with random people, I would get coaching and I finally made got a spot in the tennis academy at the club. You needed to try out for that academy so it's not something that I could've got in by luck. My hard work paid off there.
I also feel it's not always about working hard as well. Sometimes just the small things like being kind to someone, volunteering for charity, etc can find ways to come around and give opportunities. I feel that I've been given opportunities just because of my personality. I'm nice towards people, I'm efficient and I'm likeable so that has definitely played a role in helping me get jobs, friends etc. While I'm on this topic of giving back to people, I plan to sponsor 5k ecency points for weekend experience on the weekend before Christmas. I also plan on doing a participation contest this month for a community I created called eating-out so do look forward to that.
What are your thoughts on this topic? Do you agree with me if not please do leave some comments so I can understand your view on luck?
