Good day everyone! Live music, support for the local musicians, support for a local restaurant, a little food review and a call to onboarding! I went with @clairemobey and @jasperdick to a open mic evening with 10 acts performing their music. It was a tremendously fun evening.
The event was hosted by the Salt & Sage restaurant in Table View Beachfront.

The organising of the event was done by @matthewjohnroux, who has signed up and staked his claim in his name there. I am looking forward to him bringing his music to Hive! I hope to have Hive spread from there to the other local musicians who all know each other and support each other as much as the rest of Hive supports new accounts.
I have mentioned already that this is the way to do it! Instead of inviting one person to join Hive, you should be getting a group joined up together. This is not however the subject of this post.
Let's talk about the evening!
An Open Mic
Albeit an "open" mic, this collection of musicians from students to proffessionals was a curated group of talent. I do not know them all, most of whom I saw for the first time on stage that evening.
Everyone watched the end of the game between South Africa and Wales (SA thrashed them!) and off to a positive start for most South Africans.
Beachfront is an area where all the partying happens. Often, if the boks win, there is a lot of partying. Often, if the boks lose, there is a lot of drinking as well... funny that...
Here I am with the lovely @clairemobey. Look how gorgeous she is! 😍 I look almost as though I was planning to support the boks... not that I don't... but it was almost incidental!
@jasperdick and @clairemobey busy discussing musical stuff of some sort. I had ordered some food already but I will get to that scrumptious meal later.
First up to, warming up the stage was @matthewjohnroux and his son Dan. I took some short videos and took photos of each act but sometimes my phone's camera did not do the artist justice. These are more shots of opportunity, if I did not manage a good picture of someone, then someone else did though. There is a lot of Facebook coverage of this event.
Matthew and Dan played some (forgive my ignorance if I get this wrong) somewhat blues-type music. Matthew with the guitar and a heck of a voice and his son Dan (who I believe is a mere 15 years old!) playing some skillfull guitar including a solo.
Raé Swart performed 2nd with one student and then as 3rd act with two other students. Wonderful talent from all of them! (So below would be Sarah Cobley and Raphi Tzouvanni with Rae Swart)
After that, I am going to get the playing order and the names wrong. I will do my best to try pair them up with the people on the photos. Again. I think I missed a photo here and there, sometimes my phone decided to focus on the lights hanging from the ceiling and then the shot would blur.
Aha, I found the list on Matthew's Facebook page hehe:
- Zoë Stroebel with Rae Swart
- Sarah Cobley and Raphi Tzouvanni with Rae Swart
- Jaendre Olivier
- Lyle Nel
- Dan Paulse
- Silvana and Rebecca
- Dani Steyn with Matt Roux
- Warren Wazman
- Claire Mobey and Jasper Dick
- Lukin Joshua
Below is Jaendre Olivier. Sorry about the mic before the face, but the other pic blurred lol. Some 90's grunge singing I recall.
Below is Lyle Nel, performing with "Ari G" who sang and played harmonica.
I need some help identifying the below musician @matthewjohnroux.
Dan Paulse played guitar and sang, he was joined during the act by a lday who sang with him though I understand that Dan is a professional drummer as well.
Silvana and Rebecca entertained the crowd with amazing singing.
Dani Steyn with Matt Roux
Warren Wazman
Claire Mobey @clairemobey and Jasper Dick @jasperdick
Ironically, since I only took video, I do not have a large still image of these two. So I took a still from the video.
They played: South bound plane, Song of Hope and Demons Lurk
Lukin Joshua
I hope to see him on Hive soon as well. Man used a loop pedal with beatboxing, a shaker, a guitar and his voice to do some awesome stuff!
Of course I would like to get ALL these musicians and their related clans on Hive. There is so much talent and so much content out there that they can use on Hive. I've dipped my toe in and checked out these musicians who are friends with MORE musicians as well as a collection of talented and involved people that are their friends and/or family.
So much potential!
Time for the foodie Review!
Flipping the Bird!
Oh, my, word! This burger was EPIC! I elected to go with Sweet Potato fries which were nice and crispy on the outside and still soft and moist on the inside. This in itself is quite a tricky and skillful thing to accomplish. Sweet potato fries cook a lot faster than potatoes and to get this right, the chef/cook needed to do this with expert timing at the correct temperature.
This was the precursor to the main event:
Southern style fried chicken as the main meaty ingredient, slices of camembert cheese, siracha honey - wow! This burger melts in the mouth. Despite the siracha, not very spicy (I would have accepted hotter). As is often the case, the other ingredients made the taste combination just smooth and creamy and wow!
In South Africa a Big Mac meal is around R70 with the McFeast (what I would eat) closer to R100. Those contain heavily processed food ingredients. Processed cheese, processed patties, alright for a pickup and go.
THIS burger is art by comparison. THIS burger is something that is fit for a treat. For its price of R135, this is well justified by the experience. Their in-house chef who designed this burger is a GENIUS! Someone with a passion for good food!
Definitely, the Salt and Sage is a spot @clairemobey and I will go for Date Night!
Claire would really like to try that burger... I am curious to find out what other amazing eats are available here!
I shall review them again!
Till next time! Cheers!
