"Berthia, wait!" Maddie called out.
Berthia turned to see Maddie, her partner, hurrying to catch up. Maddie's short hair was already looking like they just escaped a chaotic fight and her eyes were filled with exhaustion. But her smile was still bright, still full of hope.
"We have to move, Maddie! Now!" Berthia yelled, her voice echoed through the desolate streets. "We don't have much time left!"
Maddie wasn’t shaken. She knew that the virus was spreading fast, that every minute counted. They had to find Dr. Mike and his cure before it was too late.
During the initial stage of the virus outbreak, Dr Mike had begun investigation and thorough research into the solution. He had been working on a cure for the virus and before everything went into silence, he had made some promising breakthroughs. But he needed help. He needed people to test the cure so as to see if it worked.
Berthia worked at his clinic as a janitor. For some reason, Dr. Mike drew her close because he saw potentials in her. It was during this time that she knew he was a scientist that loved reading and researching.
Of course she had told her friend Maddie. Meeting Dr. Mike now was their only hope to finding a way out.
The air was thick with the strong smell of smoke and ash; a constant reminder of the devastation that had scattered the planet.
As they ran, the clock in Berthia’s mind ticked with every step. They had less than 48 hours before the virus would render them useless. The thought sent a chill down her spine.

They finally reached the abandoned gas station, where Dr. Mike was supposed to be waiting. Berthia burst through the door with her heart racing. She held her chest panting.
Dr. Mike looked up from his work with shock. His eyes were filled with fatigue. "Ah, Berthia, Maddie. I'm glad you made it. We don't have much time."
"How much time do we have?" Berthia asked without thinking. Her voice was filled with urgency.
Dr. Mike glanced at his watch. "We have 36 hours before the virus reaches its critical point. After that, it will be too late."
Maddie's eyes widened in horror. "What happens then?"
Dr. Mike's face was grim at this point "The virus will mutate, become airborne. It will spread too fast for us to contain. We'll lose everything."
Beethia literally felt goose pimples fill her skin. They had to act fast! They had to find a way to stop the virus before it was too late.
With a strong determination this time around, Berthia and Maddie threw themselves into the task. They worked tirelessly, testing the cure, refining it, and preparing it for mass production.
As time flew by, the tension increased. Berthia and Maddie worked against the clock, racing against time to save humanity.
The hours passed, each one ticking away like a countdown to doom. But Berthia and Maddie refused to give up. They worked with every ounce of strength they had, driven by the hope of saving humanity.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, they had a breakthrough. The cure was now ready, and they had just enough time to distribute it before the virus reached its critical stage. People were getting better and recovering from the virus. And as they did, hope began to come back to life.
As they stood outside the gas station, now a makeshift hospital, watching the sun rise, Berthia felt a sense of pride and accomplishment. They had done it. They had beaten the clock, they had indeed saved humanity from the brink of extinction.
"We did it," Berthia said silently. Fatigue written all over her but that victorious smile never faded.
Maddie nodded, her eyes shining with tears. "We sure did," she said.
The next item on list was now to rebuild the destroyed world from the ashes. Time was indeed of the essence and so they made sure they kept moving, pushing forward to create a habitable place for mankind and to give all a brighter future.
Berthia and Maddie knew that there would be challenges ahead, but they were ready to face them head-on. They had saved humanity, and now it was time to rebuild and start anew.
As they walked away from the gas station, Berthia turned to Maddie and smiled. "You know, we make a pretty good team, Right?"
Maddie smiled back. "We sure do."
And with that, they walked off into the sunlight, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead, side by side.
The journey ahead wouldn't be easy, but Berthia and Maddie were determined to make a difference. They had saved humanity, and now it was time to rebuild and create a better future.
