The Lost Kingdom

The Amazon rainforest loomed before us, dense and buzzing with life, the morning we set out to uncover its secrets. As part of the Amazon Exploration Society, we ventured into uncharted regions seeking lost cultures and rare species. That steamy June day, our compasses pointed towards legends of a hidden city deep in the jungle.

Hacking through thick vines with machetes, the dozen of us hiked for hours through the muggy undergrowth. We lent each other hands crossing swift rivers on felled trees and paused occasionally to marvel at exotic birds sailing overhead.

As the harsh sun dipped low, we stumbled upon colossal stone ruins nestled between the towering trees. A crumbling pyramid temple towered above the jungle floor, its steps carved with serpents and jaguars. We had discovered the lost city!

We made camp between the monolithic pillars and the immense carved faces half-buried in creeping figs. That night we toasted to the thrilling questions ahead - who had shaped these structures centuries ago? What happened to them? And what secrets still awaited within?

By morning’s light, we fanned out to survey the sprawling city. Lush greenery had consumed its palaces and plazas, but an advanced civilization had clearly once thrived here before vanishing back into the wilderness.

I was photographing the weathered hieroglyphs when a poison dart pierced a tree two inches from my head with a sharp thwack! We all froze as dozens of muscular tribesmen wielding spears emerged from the ruins, faces painted for war.

Their leader shouted aggressively in an unfamiliar dialect. Though we tried communicating peacefully, they herded us towards the central pyramid at spear-point. We had foolishly trespassed on sacred land, and now faced grave consequences.

Inside the musty temple, they forced us before a fire-lit altar attended by an elder covered in tattoos and beads. Behind him stood an immense gold statue of a winged and fanged deity.

The elder spoke, and the warrior translated: “You invaded our home and desecrated our temple with your outsider presence. Now your fates belong to Buluc Chabtan.”

My heart dropped. That was the name of a Mayan of war and sacrifice. The elder handed the warrior a glittering obsidian dagger as we exchanged desperate looks. How could we escape to see another sunrise?

Just then, a booming roar shook the walls. The warrior’s gaze shot upwards as debris rained down. An ear-splitting screech answered, closer this time. The tribesmen shouted fearfully and fled for the exit.

We turned to go too, but the heavy door had swung shut. The chamber rumbled, stone cracking under our feet. Dust filled the air as a colossal winged shape smashed through the ceiling, blocking the exit and looming over us. An immense feathered serpent with blazing ruby eyes.

The monster reared back, preparing to strike. We shielded our heads, certain we were moments from death. Then I noticed sunlight glinting through a cracked section of wall at the pyramid’s rear.

“The wall!” I bellowed over the chaos. We pried desperately at the crumbling stone bricks near the glowing crack until an opening gaped wide enough to crawl through. The serpent thrashed in fury as we fled outside gasping for air.

We plunged into the concealing jungle just as the pyramid collapsed, leaving the giant being buried behind us. We had escaped seconds before crushing oblivion.

Regrouping by a burbling stream, we tended our cuts and bruises with torn clothing. Though shaken, we felt profound gratitude at having survived to see the rainforest dawn again.

We renounced ever speaking publicly of the hidden city. Such a vulnerable civilization and its sacred beings must remain protected mysteries, safe from the spreading touch of ‘civilization.’

One day we hoped more open communication with these guardians of the forest could be possible. But for now, we left offerings at the jungle’s edge to honor the secrets and spirits of that lost kingdom.

Then we turned towards home, forever changed by the wonders and dangers we had witnessed. The rainforest held countless untold stories and realities coexisting unseen. How lucky we were to glimpse one...and live to tell the tale.
