“I am going to hide till the planting season is over, moreover the last time I was away and didn't even bother to come back” I stood in shock watching my younger brother speaking.
My mouth parted to speak but his voice overshadowed mine so I had to swallow back my words. He had given excuses to my mother but unknown to us it was just to get away.
“This one I will just act sick” he smiled then stood up and patted my back.“Sis, sis. You always prove yourself” with that he disappeared. I watched his back dispersed.
Does my brother really feel what I feel inside? I asked myself over and over again. I just couldn't stand his casual altitude to things or I am just the only one filling up the gap.
My once muscular brother seems to turn into a lazy ass. It was too late when the virus broke out, the name was Coronavirus.
Being indoors was like punishment as the days progressed we ran out of food and both money. We ended up going to the farm. One of our family friends was kind enough to handle a plot of land ready for harvest to us and we were grateful.
I couldn't tell how we could have survived. There was no movement and there was no money moving in. I literally turned into a farmer, not too bad. One of the many sections we went to on the farm was my brother's excuse not to.
Does he eat somewhere else or is he hiding his money? We ate to survive. My elder brother was out of the way due to his health conditions.
He couldn't do much, while my younger brother, who decided to be an ass by running away from chores, left a heavy burden on me.
I smiled to myself knowing where I would hold him.“Are you all ready, let's go” my mother called us together as we squeezed ourselves into her toyota camry and headed to the farm with our tools.
We got there and began to work. I devoted myself to work sweeping off the dirt and making more ridges in the land. I occasionally peered my eyes at my younger brother to know the extent he had worked.
Not too much, I reduced my speed, acting all tired all of a sudden. I will sit on the ridge sometime exhausted already while my brother does the same like he was monitoring my every movement.Good enough my mother was far away from me to notice all these.
In her own words a girl should be very hand working telling the tales of her own time.
“Sandra” my mother shouted my name while I was half way to get some water.
“Get to work immediate” she added, straightening herself with her eyes that couldn't make me take another step.“Mummy, not in this Gen Z generation, you're asking me to come to the farm,” I said reluctantly.
“You want to challenge me, right?” she asked in a slightly annoying way, and noticing how annoyed my mother was, I got back to work.
Her eyes lingered on me for too long while I was working before she finally focused on what she was doing. Immediately she got her eyes away. I fell to the sand, the sun heating on me so furiously.
I had to find some shade to sit on while I watched my brother work, satisfied within myself that his plans to escape didn't work.
My mother overheard him and strictly warned him and chased him out of his room before he could get any opportunity to talk, coupled with not having anything to eat unless he worked.
He respected himself and followed us to the farm instead. As the sun came down, I nudged him by the shoulder while packing up the tools we used for the day.
“How far?” I asked in a teasing way; one look down my way could melt me in an instant.
“You told Mummy Baa,” my brows crease with both hands in the air in defense.
“I didn't tell her anything; you exposed yourself by yourself. I don't have anything to do with this.
“You're lying” he said but then I had nothing to prove myself to him so instead I kept quiet while packing the tools into the car.“But seriously, who do you expect to leave the work?
Do you expect to leave it for me and Deborah?
”Deborah is my little sister, who I was far older than. He grumbled like a child before getting into the space next to me.
“Don't worry I will add extras food for you tonight” I whispered into his ears.
